I don't know why everyone doesn't do it. I spent 10k on my system and have net zero cost for electricity over the year and i run two EVs 😊

Glad to hear your system is saving you money too! I still have a few more months to complete a full year with export. So far looking good on the balance 😄

Could this be done with 2nd hand panels? Or did you go with new panels as it's needed to register with the DNO?

You can use either. The DNO focuses on the inverter and whether it's compliant according to ENA. This video will give you some more details kzitem.info/news/bejne/1It-3519cHeogoo

I have been looking at the Octopus outgoing scheme to check that you don't need an MCS certificate, but unfortunately it says you still do: "We will still require your renewable energy generation to be installed by a MCS approved installer and to provide us with the MCS certificate." Can't be clearer than that.

Actually, it could be clearer than that. I've now found another page on Octopus which is specifically for non MCS certificates. That's a relief. The worse thing that could happen now is to build a DIY solar system only to find that Octopus has withdrawn the facility, although I suppose that would still leave the SEG rates as a fallback, but they are quite low.

That would be unfortunate. I registered my system without MCS, you've probably read about it here: solarenergyconcepts.co.uk/practical-and-diy/export-solar-energy-from-diy-system/

How did you go about registering your diy system? Did you do it yourself or get a company to do it.

Did it myself. There's details on the trickier parts here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1It-3519cHeogoo
