I've watch several of the podcasts that you've been on before I found this one. I really appreciate your 'no BS' and somewhat humble attitude. I get the impression that even though you come across as a pretty bright guy, you are probably significantly smarter than you let on. As an old guy (57) that started lifting pretty consistently a couple of years ago, I've become significantly stronger since I began, but my actual muscle hasn't seemed to change. I lost a bunch of fat in the first year and got down to something reasonable. I would estimate I'm somewhere between 15% and 20% bodyfat -- no visible abs but striations in my shoulders and veins in my arms. Over the past year, I've tried a few different 'programs' , but regardless of the training program, my goal has been to hit each muscle group at least a couple times per week and have tried to either increase the load or the volume from week to week. I've taken a couple of two week breaks from lifting as part of family vacations, but they were pretty active scuba diving vacations, so I don't think they caused much set back. So, after that long diatribe, here is my question. Is it possible for an old guy like me to actually gain a reasonable amount of muscle, or have I waited too long and my best hope is to maintain what I have? I've been eating approx. 1-1.2 g protein per pound of body weight, but haven't necessarily been getting 40g /meal. Usually more like about 25 - 35g / meal, about 4 or 5 times a day. I also usually try to get a pretty good high protein snack before going to bed -- usually 200-300g greek yogurt mixed with enough whey to hit my daily protein goal. Any advice? Am I destined to 'only maintain"?

@@NutritionTactics1 Thanks for the reply -- and encouragement. So far, I"m pretty satisfied with my fat loss. Leaner than I've ever been in my adult life and stronger than I've been in about 20 years. Since the new year, I've slowly been adding calories. Each week for the past 7 or 8 I've been adding about 75-100 cals / day and am starting to see the scale go up a bit. Over a 2wk moving average, I'm now gaining at about .3 or .4 lbs / week. I make kick it up a little more, but I"m not really interested in a a 'dirty bulk'. My plan is to keep this up for another 6 months or so and then cut to to around 10-12% bf. If there was a hint of visible abs, I'd be happy. I knew this would be a slow process and that I kinda messed up by starting so late, so it's good to hear that I haven't completely missed the boat. I've just started poking around on your Instagram account. Wow, tons of good stuff there too. Thanks again for your response and your willingness to share your knowledge.

Nice video! Can you tell me why you guys didn't address this: A dose of whey protein >20 g stimulates amino acid oxidation and ureagenesis. In Oliver C Witard's paper?

Thank you Jorn for this video and for sharing the full text of the paper. Maybe this question will get answered in the discussion of the paper but how much does your lean body weight depend on this amount? You could argue fewer muscles less protein required or is a minimum amount required as an on/off switch regardless of the amount of muscle tissue? On the flip side the first figure you showed 5 g of protein already stimulated MPS.

What if we add 5g leucine powder to slow digesting protein such as casein? Will the MPS spike due to instant supply of leucine? What about blend proteins of whey and casein.. Why no one is discussing such related topics.. I have searched whole KZitem.. But not a single video till 2021

So this is my question, as we know protein synthesis is elevated for much longer than 4 hours. In the first study where egg protein was used, is it possible that Protein Synthesis would have been elevated for a longer period after consuming 40 grams than 20 grams especially because egg protein is absorbed slightly slower than whey? If not, where does the extra 20 grams of protein go? It seems to me that the conclusion is 20 grams is simply enough to maximize the rate of synthesis at a point in time and that's all studies like this confirm is the maximum synthesis rate, not the net total protein synthesis over the period of post-exercise elevated synthesis which is what is more relevant. Kind of like measuring fat oxidation rates, there is a maximum oxidation rate, but the total amount of fat oxidized during exercise is as much as or more dependent or duration than rate. I guess it is too expensive to do the same study, normalize the diet for 24 hours, take the supplemental protein post workout and take measurements at 4, 8, 12, & 24 hours?

I've got a question: are you talking about consuming the optimal amount of protein in the meal directly after the workout routine? If so, do you maybe know how this relates to other meals on that particular day. Or is it every single meal 20 grams?

Hi doctor. Is this protein intake you talk about in the video additional to daily protein intake or is it the whole day protein intake?
@NutritionTactics1

This is per meal moment (so every 4-5 h)

Jorn, does the subjects training experience come into consideration? Like an athlete with 5 years of training experience may be able to utilize more protein for MPS than an untrained subject?
