I use to sell exclusives for $50-$100, but that was when I was in the beat making game for a few years and I wasn't that good. Now I on average sale beats for $250-$300 for non-mainstream artistes, but my music has improved a lot, I know my music isn't perfect, but my music is definitely radio quality. But when it's artist with a big budget I definitely haggling for higher prices, but for little artistes it's $200-300. So I base my prices on who I'm selling it to. I had big names trying to get beats for the low or trying to get the Track out with a lease instead of buying the exclusive rights, so annoying...

Your advice is always on point Pain1. When I first started out (very late in life after a career in the military) I really undervalued myself. I gave one dude a beat for free and honestly, it was as if he'd put my kids through college the way he went on, hounding me for edits, "need it longer" or "need the bridge to repeat one more time" etc Anyway, it was his most popular tune and recently he hits me up again and low and behold when I ask about budget he starts with "you should support me I'm from the same town" yada yada yada.... Point is, through undervaluing my work in the beginning, he saw it as having no value period. I wont give beats away now, gotta get SOMETHING.....ANYTHING!!

You know what I have been at this for years off and on. I don't do shit for free. Producers need to way up!! I understand that it is a struggle out here, but its about the electric, time, equipment updates and replacements, rent for the studio, and etc. GTFO with that BS pay me up front ...I need my publishing at least 50% and the price will go up when you get your contract. Oh by the way, we will have a conversation before you hear anything. You don't tell the dopeman or McDonald's let me get that upfront for free so don't ask me that garbage either. Tell those lames that misconstrue your message to beat it. You can be a $50-$100 MF if you want to but not me especially after I have spent 12K plus on my studio over the last two years and still spending. This pisses me off!!! Here in Poland situation with underground rappers buying beats is so bad that i envy you guys for selling just couple per month. Maybe the right mindset have not been born here yet, because people think that if you use illegal software and your beats are mostly sampled than you don't deserve anything for your work and in general they want beats for free to give exposure but it's mostly 100 views on youtube. And as i think that legal software is a valid point to some extent that doesn't mean it would take less amount of time for production to make something just because my daw is legal. And it's not like i haven't invested anything, i've bought my midi controlers and planing to buy a sample and much more stuff and as i go along with it i will invest in legal software. Been lucky enough to get noticed by two major label rappers here and three of my beats are going to be on the albums this year. And to be fair i said what i'm using, that samples were not from the vinyl and that i don't want any money from it. Both said it was cool, and it is exposure for me so i think that's fair on both sides. Sorry if i haven't added too much to the discussion, just wanted to show how things can go in another country.

+Wad Wan Good. Because 1, the producer is the composer of the song and therefore is entitled to the composer's share and 2, because performance royalty's don't come out of your pocket; the radio and various other media outlets pay monthly fees that cover them.

Yes, thank you, on that one. And, yes I am agree with you, it is good. But, I was thinking, why should I buy a beat, when 50% of the royalties goes automatically to a composer. I me an, don't get me wrong, I am just another underground emcee, that almost living on a street, and studio cost a lot of money. I mean, yes I can afford to buy a beat, but even if I buy it, I still have to pay 50% to a composer (according to Danish law)

Started making beats/producing as of July 2016, being in the month of December 2016 now, I'm totally new to this but artist have checked out some of my work and asked me a price. I told them $50 each beat with a deal going for 3 beats for $130. Had no complaint yet from the artist about the prices, but i have yet to sell a beat ! Just working on the legit side of the business as of now which has kind of put me on a freeze.

I checked that beatstars website out, I couldn't find a lot of details about the specifics, maybe you can help me out. When you sell a beat on there do you sell publishing rights? Any rights? Can you set a percentage of the rights you wanna sell? When you distribute to SoundCloud through them do they upload the beat to their page? Or do they only generate revenue from your own page? Where does the money get generated on SoundCloud? $9.99 and $19.99 per month is kind of steep compared to cd baby, tunecore, onerpm, and others who distribute to lots more places and still offer content Id, playlist placement, and other stuff. Why choose beatstars over these other digital distributors? How much traffic/how many transactions does the average beat maker have per month (if you have any idea I'd appreciate it), how many new customers do you have per month? I'm guessing the pitch is that it's easy to grow your reach and that you can set your own price, but is there anything more to it than that? Sorry for the long question. I'm starting out and weighing all my options. I'm in the market to sell beats as well as release my own music.

Be careful, you have a ton to learn about the fundamentals, and I see you acting on misinformation and even giving out advice to other producers. You don't "sell" your publishing rights when you sell a beat. Learn about the rest through independent research. You also have the option of contacting beatstars and asking them specifics about their service, not sure why that wasn't your first thought. You could set up a consultation session with me if you want to parse this stuff out. It's $50 for an hour give or take (business@djpain1.info for info).

DJ Pain 1 I thought that was what you were referring to around 1:12 when you said selling your beat for full ownership or leasing it. What did you mean in the video? I commented here instead of asking them directly because mainly I wanted to hear from a user of their platform before I asked them questions directly, so I can be better informed, and also because in my experience these distributors take anywhere from a day or two to a week to respond, where you tubers on channels of your size are much quicker.

noreaction literally you can set up various prices on the store, a lease in which you can sell for the cheapest price and they can sell a thousand copies etc, you have your middle leases and then you have full rights, no one else can buy that best afterwards
@noreaction1

solbergization I understand that you can set the number of copies allowed to be sold with each tier, and I understand that exclusive means no one else will purchase. What I do not understand is whether you are able to set which rights you lease or sell, or beatstars sets it for you. Also I don't know if you can lease/sell a mechanical license but not a synchronization license, or vice versa. I do not understand if beatstars monitors and enforces collection on your beats on websites which are not KZitem (using content Id). I do not understand how beatstars can monetize SoundCloud plays and how much money an artist can get per SoundCloud play. Do you use beatstars? How do you like it? How many new customers do you get per month as a percentage of the total customers you have?

noreaction wtf you don't sell mechanical licenses or synch licenses to random rappers on the internet...smh this is why I tell people to do their owe research. you're asking the wrong questions and nobody reading these comments has the time or expertise to combat your current, inaccurate ideas about the industry

Non-exclusives start at $19.99, I currently run a 2 for 1 sale and throw in an additional 50% off with a promo code. (Gets the price down to $4.99 x beat) Exlusives are $100 (I ask for a producer royalty of 4% when gross sales go over $1,000.00, retroactive to album one) I think that's a really fair deal, feedback is appreciated.

+Spiceproductions Thats all good, you are generous. But what guarantees you that the artist will notify you and pay you that royalty ? I mean how do you know ? Same question, lets say you lease allows artist to sell 2000 units. How do you know he already has or will not sell more ?
@SpiceProductionsProducerVideos

+TestChannel8855 The truth is.. there is no guarentee. Contracts are broken all the time. Generally, lets say the artist publishes the work and sells it. If the paperwork's in order, I get my producer credit and royalties. If not, then the artist runs the risk of forfeiting revenue. Besides, it's not like the artist is paying the royalty out of their own pocket, it comes from the label. If the beat makes it on a mixtape and the artist sells it in the street, I'll never find out but they might come back for more work. The way I see it, we're in a business built on relationships. If an artist is out to get me and burn me for a track, they'll find a way. Let's say that track turns into a hit..I'll find out. I know its a risk, but I have to take it. Let's face it, artist's are broke. The artist's out there with a budget will work with you and pay, they need the ROI.

i charge $15 for a lease. But with TRAKTRAIN I can setup Promo prices. So for example on www.traktrain.com/lostime I sell 2 beats for $20 or 4 for $35. I like the bundling option as it gives artists an opportunity to invest in a couple of beats rather than 1.
