Wishing you TONS of views 👍🏻 you’re so right when you say they just don’t get it. I would love to ask this price for such a repair. My only question is would you remove that piece of door casing or work around it?

Thanks. They often don't. Insurance/restoration contractors or even property managers would immediately accept such a quote in my experience. I'd try not to remove it if possible, but I do carry along a cordless brad nailer for repairs like that

I admire your break down, it is so true and so few customers understand that. Well done.

800. That repair is 3 days of visits. Including paint.

I charge a differantly hourly rate for wall repair, ceiling repair, and prime/paint match. A patch like that, (if they want me to paint match it as well) means 2-3 visits. I will end up charging for about $1000

Wow. Amazing….. I repaired a small house after being rewired by a local electrician (24 holes in all) and was told $800 was too high lol….. she got off very easy and will probably never realize such

It's not a rant, it's true. I would have charged $800US because 1. I didn't really want to do a small job unless it's a financial win for me, and 2. If they didn't pay me beyond the 50% upfront cost then at least I still take $400. I would say don't even go to a job unless they've already paid 50% up front, if they don't want to do that then they probably will not pay anything. I usually would end up blocking their number because even if they changed their mind about the upfront cost they would be just as difficult to get the final payment. Another thing I would do if they said it didn't seem like it was worth that much to have that small piece repaired for $800, is offer to take care of the door and door trim for another $200 as all the overhead is already on there and I would have likely ended up having to remove the left piece anyway.

As a homeowner, paying for that extra quarter of the day because it's unreasonable for you to go to another job is annoying but understandable. But it does make me want to see if there's something else I could ask for that fits in that time frame. I wouldn't call that net profit until you account for labor cost. Even if labor is you working for your business. You put your in-pocket last, but that's a legitimate expense to the business!

That's something I should've mentioned, I left out half of what I wanted to say for brevity, I always quote small repairs at either a Half-day rate or Full-day rate. Sometimes I'm finished faster than I expected, so I'll always offer to fix any other little dings or dents or just anything they might need help with in the house or yard. Both as a matter of principle, and it also goes a long way with referrals and such.

This is easy stuff to learn and DIY... with 500$ you can buy all the material and tools for several jobs.

Good luck, 😅😂 it is unrealistic. Getting knowledge, tools and on the end lending with cracks to call contractor, that it what most likely will happen.

Have you ever used a hairdryer to dry joints faster?
@Interior_Works
8 ай бұрын
Yes, in the past I only used a hair dryer, but I recently found a heat gun dries it faster. For patches, I aim a carpet fan at it and move a heat gun around. Dries surprisingly fast.

On patches, I use setting mud for the first few coats, they set up, but I like them to be also dry- moisture free- then a top coat with all purpose. If the base-coats aren't completely dry, I've found the moisture bleeds into the all-purpose top coat. Then I can't sand it same day. I like each coat to dry. A heat gun and carpet fan will make it happen. Patches are the easiest money in this trade, it's just a matter of pricing it right and being in and out in the same day.

Why not tape it with all purpose? Then use hot mud over the all purpose? Is it because the all purpose takes longer to dry and you want to get outta there same day?
@Interior_Works

That's the reason for small individual patches. If there's extensive patch work at the same location, I'll just use all purpose for everything, and make multiple short trips, hot mud is often a pain to work with, especially if the mud starts setting before I'm done

In most major Canadian cities,, the average wages for experienced drywallers is 35-40/hr, the businesses they work for factors much higher. A guy with all the machine tools can produce 50-100/hr working at sq. ft. rates in new construction. Depending if he's working privately or piece-work. Repairs have to compete against that for a busy drywall professional to book one in. Unless he's not busy and working cheap, but that's often a red flag.

Just explaining the costs of doing business, I quote repairs by photo, and most other small Drywall/Paint businesses in my area do the same. A person can easily get multiple quotes, and make their own decision on who to go with, or if it's better to just DIY the repair.

The market decides the prices, if I overcharged, I wouldn't get any work..
