I bought this book and cannot believe the amount of important information it contains. All of my plants have improved. All of them. Just by being educated. Best plant book I have ever purchased!

I would add that to determine soil moisture level one needs to probe an inch or more down into the pot, because soil dries from the top down. The top inch or so of soil may be quite dry but the soil lower in the pot , where most of the roots are, might still be very moist. Just looking at or touching the surface of the soil , as is often recommended , doesn’t inform one that a plant has dried enough to be ready for a watering.

At first I found a soil meter really helpful for checking my Calatheas that required more moisture and not too much. The meter comes with a chart that shows what level of moisture indicated by numbers from 1 to 4 for each type of plant. Calatheas are a 3.

I just ordered your book! I can’t wait to dive in and learn so much. In the meantime, can I get some feedback on watering changes during winter months? I have upped the lighting in my place with grow lights to keep my tropicals “working” during winter. However, do I need to change my method of watering? I’ve been doing the soak and dry out method but have had some plants show symptoms of overwatering.

Do you have a list of which plants need each of the different 3 watering strategies?

When you look up any plant, as long as it doesn't specify a particular frequency (like "water once a week" - which may or may not work), they should describe the watering as one of the three.

I am looking through your video library for a moisture meter range of partially dry, etc. Perhaps this is in your book or on your website?

Hi Darryl, I'm going out of town for nine days and might not find someone who can water my houseplants (including a maidenhair fern)! Is there a method you suggest for keeping them watered? I've seen the method of sticking a bottle in the soil. Some of my plants are really too small for that. Will placing them in a tray of water for nine days rot the roots? Maybe a DIY drip irrigation?
