No, I don't get nervous before a race. Excited - yes; nervous - no. It's only running. It's just for fun. As Andy said at 3:05, 'you do it because you love it - if you don't, something is wrong'. Stop the paralysis by analysis, and just enjoy yourself.

I needed this today!! I did 1/2 marathon today and my time was slower than I wanted / planned. Was a bit gutted & embarrassed - but it was not important to anyone but me - everyone else was just impressed that I even did it, no one cares about the time but me 🤣

I felt these feelings a bit with my first 10k earlier this year - I felt I was really slow but as TRC say "finish lines, not finish times". Congratulations for your first half marathon and good luck for your next one! 🙂💪

Completed my first Olympic length triathlon yesterday with a mate who is training for a half iron man. I was not super nervous but my mate was. Before we started the swim we went over the point of the race - we were there, not to win, but to experience the longer distance (had only done sprint distance before), the race environment (always different than training) and to trouble shoot what problems may come up when out for 3+ hours instead of less than 2. Then she settled down and had a great race. Thanks for the video!

I was so nervous before my first race event earlier this year, especially as I had a knee injury and hadn't been able to train much in the few weeks beforehand. I overcame my nerves by telling myself that the race was for *me* - to see if I could do it, to see if I could show up for myself, and that whether I got to the start line was completely within my control...the finish line was a bonus. I did it in more than 15mins quicker than my goal time. So much of running is in the mind and I love this video!

I have not got nervous about a race in terms of timing and finishing. But as someone with Crohn's disease I do get very anxious about having an "accident" and embarrassing myself. Knowing where and how many porta-loos there are, often determines if I will race. Many times that information is not so available when you sign up. I know not the greatest subject but I am sure it is a concern for some with or without my condition.

I get really nervous and stressed before a race, I find a type of meditation really helps. I close my eyes and repeat a mantra that I stole from Lighting McQueen, "speed, I am speed, float like a Cadillac sting like a beemer."

I was much less nervous for my second half marathon. Before it, I had a laugh over my first half marathon race photos where I’m pulling the funniest pained expressions around mile 12 and at the finish line. It’s a good reminder that 1) I got through the pain, and 2) smile as much as you can, you never know when there’s a camera!

Good topic, thanks. I’ve gotten the tip of doing smaller races before the big race, to work on my pre-race routine. I was so nervous for my first marathon that my hartrate went up so high that my legs were filling up with lactate before 24k. I finished on target, but wat a struggle. Berlin marathon next. Looking forward to it.

@@runningchannel at the moment not super, I have some niggles to attent to. But the new trainingplan is hard, lots of long runs (which I love). Even incorporated some of you’re sessions. A goal is finishing 3:30, hoping not to break myself.

I've only done 2 in-person charity 5ks, that are for an organization to encourage girls to learn to run, so no time pressure. Because I knew I could walk the distance if needed, I was sure I'd finish. The goal 2nd year was to be faster than the 1st one. All my other 5ks have been virtual, so I have just been competing against myself.

I could really sympathize with Andy's point about being scared of the "pain"/effort it involves. I have run many HMs and multiple Marathons, however, since I pushed really hard in one of the HMs in 2019 and broke my metatarsals during the process, I'm often scared of a.) Again experiencing that level of discomfort and b.) (Mostly) of really pushing TOO hard and hurting myself (getting an injury), because I know I'm capable of doing that. I have raced 3 HMs and a marathon since then, with PRs in the HM distance, but I always feel like I'm holding back, because in none of those races have I ever felt so exhausted than in that race where I broke my foot. I really wish I could finally pass this fear of injury. 🙈🙄

I began running at age of 57. I live in small town where runners all know each other. I moved into this town at 55. When I did my first 5k race, there was about 200 runners not all town's runners competed. I won 2nd place in my category. Greatest feeling! However, now I was expected to compete and win. My 2nd 5k, I lost and just didn't reach my PB. I was devastated. I was embarrassed. I never raced again. Always put up excuses. Back then I didn't really know how to run with good form but was in good shape. Now, I'm more experienced, better form and in physically excellent shape. I've done everything I was told to do, I'm ready. Yet, I just can't do it. I simply can't sign up. I'm afraid of failure. I was told yesterday to sign up for a race today. That put me in a panic. I didn't sign up and today I feel like crap. Ugh. I need to get out of this hole I'm in.

We're sorry to hear that you feel like that Linda, running should be a way of alleviating stress rather than adding to it. You will always worry about your performance far more than anyone else around you, and they certainly won't be judging you anywhere near as much as you think (if at all!). It's worth thinking about why you started running and then perhaps entering races that are a different distance, so you feel less pressure to compete with you previous time. TRC are sending lots of encouragement and support! 💪

Doing Cork marathon in just under 3 weeks from now, will be marathon #11. Found it hard to 'trust the training' the first time I tried a new way/approach to training as I had not done it before. Also 1sr marathon I was well into training, and did a long run, asked myself could I run an extra hour if I had to & answer was yes. Think it helps to have a race plan, keep it simple, e.g. the pace I'm going to try to run at, don't go out fast at the start, settle into the pace. You know what you need to do, focus on that and the nerves of the unknown seem much less Not sure I agree with a b or c plan, when the going gets tough, and it will, don't want temptation to give up on main goal too easy. That said, have to be sensible and keep things in perspective, too hot & humid? Back off, number one priority is your health, there's another race coming

I used to get really nauseas on the day before race day when I ran Stockholm Marathon. It took many years before I realized I wasn''t unlucky to get ill. I just needed to take a short jog the day before. Totally stress related. Of course, once I figured that out, i injured my hip so bad, I can't even run anymore. the irony...

I ran a prkrun last November and was beyond nervous. It was my first "race" since 1997. I burst into tears crying at the turn around point. Prior to this I had never been affected by nerves having run numerous 10k's and 10 milers during the mid 90's. I normally have a "get stuck in" attitude. Maybe getting older has had an effect.

Can anyone please help me? I’m about 4 months into running consistently at least 3 days a week, but ever since I started I’ve been getting horrendous pains under my right ribs which can sometimes get so bad I have to stop the run, basically every run I go on is ended due to the pain and not due to my legs or fatigue. I run at a VERY slow pace to try and combat this problem but even so about 3/4 km in the pain creeps in. I know that’s it’s not my breathing as I’ve practised stomach breathing often and it’s not due to diet or eating/drinking to close to the run. If anyone could offer any sort of help I’d be more then grateful as it’s really getting me down as I feel like I cannot progress due to this problem. Thanks in advance, Liam.
