I have a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta. These cars have a poor design that causes leaks from the sunroof into the front and rear of the car. Wet floors, wrecked headliners, musty smells and mold are just some of the symptoms and/or effects.
I removed the headliner so I could fix the leaks and re-upholster the headliner.
In the front, typically the drain tube detaches from the lower section where the water would then exit the car (midway up the door column) and water instead comes into the car from behind the floor panels (awfully close to the fuse box too!) Although I believe others have reported the leak can come from the top fitting of the hose above your head, which would then cause leaks in the headliner near the front of the vehicle.
In the rear, the leak typically comes from where the hose meets the fitting at the top. This then causes the water to leak down the headliner (through it in some cases) and it makes its way behind the panels and onto the carpet in the back seats.
Mk4 Jettas are from 1999 - 2006, but in my research I have seen that this problem exists in Golfs and various other years. I believe the lawsuit covered Passats, Beetles and some Audis too.
This video shows what the ceiling looks like without the headliner and some of the workings of the drain tubes.
