what happens when the bubbles appear when it's "do not touch" state of drying? I've used glass coat from feast and Watson - total disaster, re-sanded it, reapplied again, all clean, and when the "Working time was over" bubbles started coming up, even after blowtorch job (ca 20cm above the table top, small flame). Question. Can a top coat once cured - sanded to the bubble, bubble refilled, and then when cured, sanded with finest papers, to cut and polish it up???

You don't need to sand after the first coat if you don't let it fully dry. If it fully dry then you will need to sand it so the next coat has something to key to but if you only let the 1st coat dry until its tacky but not coming off on your fingers and you can make an impression with your finger then your good to go with the 2nd coat.

Depends on the resin, temperature, humidity. Basically, until it tacky, but not leaving any residue or resin on your hand. My resin, 1,5 hour. Another brand, can be 8 hours
@pkk639
3 жыл бұрын
You have to make sure it doesnt fully dry or then you will have to sand it all so the next pour has something to key too. So, if you wait until (as said above) it is tacky but not wet - untouchable without any residue on your fingers but different brands and different thicknesses will take different times so it's basically a matter of just keep checking.

You said you sprayed on a lacquer staining sealer first, what product did you use? How necessary is this step? I have a Minwax Polycrlic Protective Finish, will that work? Will that work with the Famowood Glaze Coat? When you "sealed" the table the second time, how long between sealing and flooding did you wait?
@danielliguori7168
5 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know too. He said it was to prevent air bubbles but my understanding is that it's necessary to prevent adhesion issues between the epoxy and the oil base stain. I made a desk out of a big piece of walnut butcher block that was oiled from the manufacturer. I sanded it down but assume there's still some oil in the wood so trying to figure out if I need to do an oil based polyurethane first before epoxying. My understanding is a few coats of any oil based poly before epoxying will do the trick. In my case I'm just unsure it's necessary if I sanded the wood to strip off the natural oil that butcher blocks are coated with for food preparation grade finish.
@danielliguori7168
5 жыл бұрын
So for anyone who happens to be in the same situation as me, it was recommended that I test the oil content of the wood by dripping a bit of water on it and if it absorbed into the wood that meant no poly would be necessary, however, if the water beaded then it would need to be sealed. In my case sanding the surface was sufficient in stripping the oil off and I went straight to my seal coat and then did two flood coats and it came out great. I made a mistake that isn't frequently addressed in videos, which is how you coat the edges. In my case I fussed with the sides when I should have just let it spill over. I routered a fillet on the edge since this was for a desk - because there's not a sharp corner or a border the epoxy spills over the sides rather unevenly at first so I tried fixing it but made it a bigger issue (turning a non-issue into a real issue). Don't try pushing the epoxy around to smooth the sides, just let it pour over the sides and as it sets up just periodically scrape the very bottom to remove the "icicles" before they harden, but don't scrape the sides, just let gravity do its thing. Also, bubble removal introduces potential issues that are far worse than a little bubble you couldn't pop, or a slight dimple somewhere in the surface. Getting after it too much to pop a bubble will likely result in a much larger dimple where the epoxy gels unevenly due to the torch overheating the epoxy. Basically, the next time I'll just pour it on and leave it alone because otherwise the perfect becomes the enemy of the good. Hit it with the torch or some alcohol, but don't stand over it for an hour like I did or you're just adding blemishes. Still very pleased though, and I have a quarter inch of beautiful glossy finish on my butcher block adjustable height desk.

NEED HELP! I built two tables using antique license plates as the tops. Each one I covered with a two-part epoxy system. Had to have the ratios right because I used it all. Stirred it thoroughly. Yet both projects ended up with soft/gooey spots. I peeled and scraped it all off, thinking I got a ad batch from HD. Gave it another shot. Better, but still at least one small soft spot on each table. I even offered another brand of product for the second table. What am I doing wrong here? They look amazing!! But the soft spots make them unusable and redoing them is expensive and very, very messy!
@afyounie
5 жыл бұрын
After you thoroughly mix the two part per the instructions, transfer it to a new container. The issue is that some unmixed resin will reside on the edges of the first mixing cup. Using a new cup before the pour ensures you don't get any unmixed resin onto your table.
@pawemichalak6275
5 жыл бұрын
you didn't mix correctly, you need to really spend some time on that and get everything on the edges of mixing bucket in and mix for around 10 minutes non stop, making sure its all mixed correctly. your coat behaves that way because there are parts that were not mixed in the correct ratio. thats why they didnt want to harden as much as the rest of the surface. i think you might have given up on the project after 8 months, but maybe some1 else makes the same mistake.

@alvaradopaintinginc.5869
6 жыл бұрын
You have to constantly brush the edges or vertical surfaces while it is drying to prevent sags or an extreme amount of dried drips. It will eventually get to a point when you cannot brush it anymore. Once it dries you will have some drips that you will have to sand down with a palm sander until it is smooth.
@curtlarsen62
5 жыл бұрын
Also, before you apply epoxy to the edges, take some masking tape and tape off the bottom edges so when the epoxy dries, the "icicles" come off easily without the need for sanding. But overall, I found it best to do all surfaces to be coated horizontally first and tape off anything else, allowing that to dry for 3 days and harden completely. That way, no potential of vertical drip lines OR icicles happening.
