Hi Steph, I have several questions, and thank you in advance for answering them. What hat press machine are you using? Where can I get one, and how much did it cost? Did your machine come with platens of various sizes to press different sizes of hats? Why did you choose that particular hat press?

Good Morning N - Here's a link to the hat press - It's $900 as I type this and yes, it comes with different sized platens. colmanandcompany.com/HX-STXC.html We chose this one because of the platens and the auto release. Here's a lower cost one that is still functional, but if you watch the videos on each page you can see the difference. colmanandcompany.com/DC16-CAP.html It's $300

Did you spray an adhesive onto the back of the patch first?

What if you don’t have a fancy machine like this?? I used a special glue to glue a logo on my wool hat and have seams around the logo where I cut around it. Would heat tape help hide the seams?

No Tyler, the heat tape just holds it in place while you're pressing it.

What type of adhesive would you use for this process if you bought a retro patch on eBay that you wanted to heat press onto a blank SnapBack cap? Would you just use the Colman heat seal and cut to the size of the patch? Complete novice here but want to get into making hats for myself with retro patches.

Wife and I are just starting our little hobby in this, we are pressing patches onto Richardson Trucker Hats. The creasing problem seems to be solved with your tip, thank you for that, just seems like we're pressing at 360 when we may or may not need to as it seems like we're melting the backing of the cap with a couple we did. Any tips? Patches vary by where we purchased them.
@ColDesiColman

Hey James! We are happy to hear that your creasing problems have been solved. When we create patches we use Heat Seal backing. We only press at about 320 - 330 degrees for about 20 - 25 seconds. So I definitely think you can decrease your current pressing temp.

Hi Steph, How did you achieve the merrow edge to the patch? Was that done on the embroidery machine? Merrow's usually wrap around the edge. Great video!
@ColDesiColman
Жыл бұрын
Yes! These patches were embroidered on our Avance Embroidery Machines. When having the patch border digitized, you can request different stitch styles for the outer edge. We then use a hot knife to cauterize the edges of the patches.

I have a question, my heat press is leaving a mark where the plate hits on the hat. Why would it do that?
@ColDesiColman
2 жыл бұрын
Your pressure is probably too high. You can also play with the hats positioning on the lower platen. But unfortunately, some hats are really tricky and are prone to heat press marks!

If it's got heat seal applied, it should work fine. If not, you can always apply the heat seal yourself. It's sold separately at colmand and company

Hello, thanks for the info. in the video, it's very helpful. Can you tell me the material of your visor and caps? Do you have any experience pressing acrylic caps with this method. I ask because acrylic is more sensitive to high heat. If so, do you use a lower temp? Thanks agin for the video.
@ColDesiColman

Hi Gabriel - good question! Acrylic has a low melting point so we normally do not heat press it. You can try, just start with low temperatures and work your way up
