I think one of my favourite quotes that really sums up this mindset for me is from Rick and Morty in the episode "Rixty Minutes" where Morty is trying to convince Summer not to run away because ultimately life has no meaning: "Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody's gonna die. Come watch TV." The show is riddled with this philosophy, and I absolutely love it. If you haven't seen it I couldn't recommend it enough!

Aujourd’hui, maman est morte. Regarding Camus' perspective on Absurdism, he claimed that upon discovering the absurdity of life, one can take one of three paths-or perhaps sample each of them in turn: 1. Commit suicide. 2. Adopt a religion (or comfort philosophy) and fabricate a purpose. 3. Embrace the absurdity, and realise that not everything needs to make sense. The first two are weak tea, so the third option is the best choice. In the strictest fashion, Nihilism claims not only is there no meaning, but one cannot even construct one. Absurdism is outlined above, and Existentialism claims you can make your own meaning, which is sort of option 2 in Absurdism.
@error.418
5 жыл бұрын
Existentialism is the belief that through a combination of awareness, free will, and personal responsibility, one can construct their own meaning within a world that intrinsically has none of its own. Nihilism is the belief that not only is there no intrinsic meaning in the universe, but that it’s pointless to try to construct our own as a substitute. Absurdism is the belief that a search for meaning is inherently in conflict with the actual lack of meaning, but that one should both accept this and simultaneously rebel against it by embracing what life has to offer.

It's good to see another healthy nihilist! What gets me through life is by uplifting people and most of the time that means I let people believe in God and their fairy tales. I once was a Christian pastor, but now I'm an atheist. Been one for 3 years with no regrets. Yes, I did go through an existential crisis about losing my faith, but for the last 3 years I have been good. I have even gone through some hard times recently and I still believe as I have for the last 3 years. The meaning of life to me is being happy with yourself and helping others to be happy with their own selves. I have had parents to hurt me, pastors to slander me, Christian and non-Christian friends to turn away from me with no fault of my own, and my ex wife to cheat on me. And to add to that for my faith to betray me in a metaphorical way because as I read more of the Bible I learned that there were extreme moral contradictions between Christ and the Old Testament God. Not contradictions from my own subjective opinions, but they were objective contradictions that even many of my pastor friends couldn't explain. I actually find peace knowing there isn't a hell. This sounds dark, but it's great to know that even if you die the most horrible death, it won't matter when you die. So that means you need to die honorably. In other words, if you are dying with cancer, try to die in a way that helps your love ones move on and live in a way that helps them get closure. I try to live like I'm being judged by a fair god. I think logically as an agnostic. And when it comes to the afterlife, I'm an atheist. The only reasons you should fear death is due to leaving behind loves ones and due to regrets and due to not learning to be happy with yourself. So try to live a life where you don't have to worry about regrets. And some people should feel regret because some people have a lack of conscience, but instead of withering in guilt do what you need to heal what you have done to the best of your ability. Death should not be feared with a life well lived.

I too am going through a similar situation as you. A Christian who has lost faith. I had a long argument about morals and even tho I was able to answer all their replies, it still shook my faith because they are a lot of contradictions. There's also so many religions there's a chance we could be wrong anyway so yes it's best to live a life hoping to be judge fairly by a god. It seems most people leave the church because of the lifestyle, not me. I like the humbleness of it. If I accomplished something I like to thank god and not take all credit. I like the hardship and discipline of dealing with temptation and staying true to faith. One partner for life instead of meaningless hook ups. I understand it's not the case for everyone, some of the most cruelest people you can meet is in church. However it's not as easy for me to disregard a creator. It's either something came from nothing or something always existed. As of know either is a possibility of a finite or infinite universe. Not to mention the billions of people who believe in a higher power, it's hard to disregard every case as placebo instead of divine intervention. I've also had some crazy experience dealing with new age practices that you probably call a delusion, so I'll spare you the details . I'm not sure what my point is in all this rambling, but to share my own experience and can help you're perspective. There are many possibilities so we should keep discovering and learning to expand our ideologies.

The idea that death is the only guaranteed thing in life is something I think about constantly. The second part: "then when do you actually die?" is something I've never really thought about but is super interesting. I've also found comfort in a kind of nihilism when dealing with anxiety/panic attacks. For me, it also helps to see myself as just an animal in a long chain of animal evolution on this planet. My individual issues don't really matter, and when you consider that they don't matter, they can kind of just disappear. I see humanity as this wave that's sweeping over the planet, and I'm just caught up in the wave. Anyways, thanks for sparking some thought! :)

In the words of Albert Camus, "Those who lack the courage will always find a philosophy to justify it." This is essentially how I view these... pessimistic 'nihilists.' They're largely edgy teens and generally people who are not very successful in life, thus they flee towards nihilism because there they can be at ease knowing their own failures don't matter. This is truthfully what these philosophies offer, however they take these philosophies in bad faith so as to justify their own negative behavior and avoid introspection, rather than out of genuine belief. That said, those in glass houses should not throw stones. From day to day I'll find myself alternating between existentialism, nihilism, and absurdism. This just goes to show that I also need to do more introspection and reading.

Logan Azure - Remember though, that the idea of the 'edgy teen' is a more modern internet creation that is spread to prevent people from thinking about important things. And generally, I've found those who are averse to philosophy or theology tend to be small minded and I say that not as an insult but understanding that these things are scary to think about. Another reason I think that these philosophies are associated with edgy teens because unfortunately many teens latch unto these things they've read on the Internet as a means to rebel or try to 'scare' people with these ideas because at the heart of it these are scary things to consider, though again coming out of the mouth of a teen they are readily and promptly dismissed. Personally, I find that 1 out of every 100 people who stumble unto these ideas go on to read more to expand their knowledge and broaden the scope of their perspective. It is a shame that these ideas are marked and dismissed because of children who are emotional and lost. The sign of whether these teens want to know more is whether they bother to delve into the opposition to what they are entertaining as true. As a teen up until college I read and studied theology at my Christian university yet also read about atheism from a former Christian. If you are going to talk about a philosophy you ought to explain the opposite lest you look like an inept teenage moron. The best way I can explain how teens wield philosophy is how they wield the information they think will lead to getting a girl/boyfriend, recklessly and without regard for implication driven solely by them. Sometimes actions speak louder than words and so if a teen is talking endlessly about how nothing matters and insists others listen , then you can bet it is a ploy for attention otherwise the rule would dictate spreading the word is futile. I could go on and on but yeah I hate when kids act like they are insightful,
@QC99

Yes, there is something angst-y about these philosophies, but that doesn't mean they're not 'grown up' philosophies. They grow out of a very big-picture realization that the universe is indifferent to everything human (in fact, all biological life, and, in fact, everything inanimate as well), and that human beings anxiously attach themselves to the cultures they find themselves enmeshed in since birth (what several thinkers have called "the symbolic") in order to assuage the dread that comes from this initial realization. Life, in my view, needs to be a kind of blind striving: We arrived at 'ourselves' evolutionarily due to aeons of it. Following this, our genes effectiveness at getting themselves passed on is compromised once we 'decide' that our own individual genes don't matter in the grander scheme. Perhaps these individuals will be the end of the road, then, and no future human generations will possess their genes. ...Hopefully they had fun while they were here!

I do believe that it's possible for all of these philosophies to just be an excuse for a lack of courage. However I don't think this is necessarily related to unsuccessful people. Things like depression and anxiety tend to be more common in demographics with higher standard of living than that of lower standard of living. Maybe it's not people who look to rid themselves of their failures. But maybe they wish to find a reason to stop trying. These philosophies don't want people to not care about failure. They want people to not care at all about anything. But yeah I also need to do some more reading because it still doesn't explain why wealthier demographics struggle with these the most.

Why? because as you said if we are an Emergence, we can decide what to make the point of our lives (we can have other inspirations but we need to be honest with ourselves about if we are in drivers seat or not). Life is one, you can make it the most of it. You dont need to be grounded by the end of it and one of the points is to pass down the information you gathered in your life and have it available so the next person journey can start maybe smoother than ours. One's own death is kind of uninteresting: If you get to experience it you can't tell anyone about it and as long as you don't get to experience it you don't really know anything about it because no one has told you about it. Other fun thought is that there are two kind of people in the world: immortals (those who die after you) and those who see you as immortal (those who die before you). -And that would mean that whether you count yourself in either group you can't die.

Ray to not matter, is to be free. Who defines the matter? We kid ourselves into believing we do, but evidence shows that our society, family, and friends typically define what matters. That’s what is absurd. Once it’s realized that we are full of shit, given that no human can process all the knowledge of the world, and is incapable of even comprehending the knowledge unknown in the universe, it becomes apparent that we are absurd, and believing that you know something or I know something is by definition absurd. So just have fun and laugh it off. There’s really nothing else to do. Meaning is a pacifier for the mind.

I am not a nihilist but thank you for explaining what optimistic nihilism is or how to become one. You're crazy but I can't help to like you all of the sudden

Hey, not sure if you’re still active on KZitem anymore, but if you haven’t read The Quran a Complete Revelation, which confirms the Torah and the Gospel, I suggest that you do with an open mind. There’s a free copy PDF online just search the one by Sam Gerrans. Try to read a little every day with an open heart, and ask a higher power of your understanding for help/guidance.

Get your god or higher being anywhere else, nothing matters, you won't convince a nhilist that there is some meaning

Lagoon of Baboon Coom You’re right I can’t do anything. God is the only one who guides. Read the Quran. You’ll find nothing but peace.

Lagoon of Baboon Coom she’s also not a nihilist, she claims to be an absurdist.

Stfu I already found peace, I don't need your Quran or Bible or whatever, I don't need to believe in some higher power just to stay sane

Also Optimistic Nhilism and one of 3 parts of Absurdism are very close, it's just that people who call themselves Optimistic Nhilists don't want to be called Absurdists (including me, because it doesn't sound right to people) and people who call themselves Absurdists don't want to be called Optimistic Nhilists, because of the word Nhilism, which people often think means you are having existential crisis

but claudia rankine was talking specifically about the constitution (imagined and made real) of "Blackness". That context is too important.

I unfortunately have been brought to this planet so I might as well conform to everyone else's opinion.
