I also plan on going into the military after getting my first two degrees (planning on double majoring for both my law and medical degrees). And than after getting perhaps a masters in both I will go into military. (Should take me around 5-6 years, if I’m capable counting residency for being a medical doctor of course, and perhaps an apprenticeship with a law firm if that’s possible, but not necessary of course). Maybe just get a Juris Doctor degree in law, and an md so that I can become a general practitioner doctor.

The key is to keep learning as much as you can about the law and law school. The more you learn, the more you can determine if becoming a lawyer is right for you. In the US there are several "value" law schools, where someone can attend for a low price. Some of my students this year are paying nothing for their legal education as they work a few hours at the university to cover their tuition.

Hello! First of all I would like to thank you for creating these whole series of law school related videos😊 It really helped me a lot! I'm a university student in South Korea who is considering going to a law school in States so the information that I can get access to are sadly relatively limited :( Anyways, If you don't mind, there are a few questions that I would like to ask. I know that the two most important factors in getting into a lawschool are your LSAT score & GPA but are there any extra-curricular activities that you believe would benefit in terms of applying or maybe even getting through the law school years? Also, I already took a semester off(this was basically to rest) and I'm currently planning to take one more for an internship. Do you think that it will be still worth to have some sort of work experience while graduating a year late compared to other students? Thank you so much in advance! (P.S I'm a non-native speaker so there might be some mistakes. Hope you'll understand it)
@Learnlawbetter
4 жыл бұрын
First, thanks for watching--glad that the videos are helping non-English speakers! Taking some time off to work is a great idea because it takes into account brain development. Human brains don't fully develop until we reach the age of 25. So by taking some time off after college, you are allowing your brain to get closer to peak development. Also, having some work experience will allow you to make more connections to the law--it will be less theoretical for you. As to extracurricular activities, many people do college debate. This can help you with developing research skills and learning to think quickly. Also, you need to practice your English. This means reading as much as you can and also writing. I've seen many foreign students fail because they just can't keep up with the reading, or on a timed exam not being able to write quickly enough.

Professor, why do they not do the charcter and fitness thing first when a undergraduate who has earned their degree first and applies to law school it seems more logical and practical? Because there is no guarantee that someone will graduate from law school. Also, many law students don’t know what State in which they plan to take the bar exam. Finally, if there are issues, each state bar would need to determine whether the problem should keep someone from practicing law. A few states have allowed convicted murderers to join the bar.

It is certainly something to think about. Is there any chance you can continue this with a part II? What usually happens once a person becomes a lawyer? I am sure they don't immediately start their own law firm. How does the career path usually work? At what point does a person decide if they want to become a criminal lawyer or civil lawyer? It appears there are many opportunities as a lawyer.

@Learnlawbetter

The only GPA that is examined is undergraduate GPA. However, a law school will look at a graduate degree if the law school is very selective in whom they admit (e.g., Yale and Harvard), or also at students with marginal grades and an improved track record in a graduate program.

Two eyes give you better depth perception. Doesn’t make it difficult to read. By the way, there have been many successful people with only one eye: President Theodore Roosevelt, actor Johnny Depp, and singer Sammy Davis Jr.

While it is useful to have a ged or hs diploma, it is not necessary to be admitted into college. At least not here in California...?

Every college sets its own standards. The normal is a GED or HS diploma, but in certain circumstances that can be waived pretty much anywhere.

Wait, I don't understand. First you graduate high school (withIGCSE and A levels), then you go to college to earn s bachelor degree, you take the LSAT, you enter a law school, you take the bar test, and you're s lawyer? I thought you took the LSAT and then went to a law collage. So, you go to collage and study whatever and then you go to a thing called law school?

Yes, in the US and Canada, law school is a graduate program. In most other countries law school is an undergraduate program that you complete after high school. Australia is currently transitioning to the American model.

Hi guys! I'm a teen right now and I don't know what I want to be in life. Ever since I was 6 years old I always wanted to be a pilot, then I dreamed of being a lawyer, doctor or just be a businessman. I hope I find my true calling soon

For now, keep exploring. The best way to do that is by reading great literature, which will expand your mind. Read Plato’s dialogues if you’ve never read them before.

Hello, is it possible to practice law if you are a foreign student, but you are going to get an LLM in the USA.? Do I need to study again with JD?
@Learnlawbetter
3 жыл бұрын
It depends on which State you live in because each of our 50 States regulate the practice of law in their jurisdiction. In many States you would need to earn a JD, but in others no.

@@Learnlawbetter This may sound strange, but is it possible that I will graduate with a bachelor's degree in international law and enroll in an LLM in the United States, but after graduation will I be able to enroll in a JD and will there then be a valid LLM?
@Learnlawbetter
3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are asking whether you can practice law in the US, with the JD from a US law school the traditional way most people become practicing lawyers. Each of our 50 States determines the requirements for practicing law within their borders. If your international law degree would allow you to practice law in your country, then some States would accept that degree without a JD. But don’t forget, work visas are hard to get, and US law firms rarely hire lawyers without a JD.

Your age will not play a factor when looking for a job. Many students begin law school after taking a few years off. You should be a bit more disciplined, which should lead to higher grades.

What are the requirements for bachelor in law in US if we are foreigners ?
@Learnlawbetter
4 жыл бұрын
Law schools want to make sure you have a bachelor's degree that is similar to a US bachelor's degree. Generally, most European degrees qualify, even though they are three year programs. Each law school will make that determination for themselves.

@@Learnlawbetter If one manages to get into a top JD program as foreigner, is it likely that they will be able to get a work permit afterwards? Would it be appropriate to state working as a lawyer in the US as an aspect in the motivational letters for law schools or would it not since it contrasts the F1-visas requirement that the intent is to only stay in the US temporarily?
@Learnlawbetter

A law firm would want to hire you because of the effort to get a work visa. Especially with the oversupply of lawyers. The law school admissions cannot address the work issue.

To enter law school in the United States you first need an undergraduate degree in any subject and score well on the LSAT. I've had students that received their college degrees in other countries before, so that's not a problem. The main difficulty for foreign students is English. Our exams are timed essays, and that is difficult for some from other countries. This means you need to work hard now mastering English, so read as much as you can and practice.
