Unlike most of my other braiding tutorials, I would classify this one medium difficulty instead of easy since it can be a bit finicky if trying to get a specific style, but with a little patience and challah maneuvering, you can achieve the look you're aiming for! 👏
Tips for this 7 Strand Challah:
• Make sure to lightly flour or oil your strands to help keep them from sticking together
• If the dough you are using is too wet/doesn't hold it's shape well, it will be difficult to keep the shaping after braiding and flipping over the challah, so keep this in mind!
• Towards the end of braiding, don't get flustered when running out of strands! Do as much as you can & simply either taper the ends or snip off any excess strands and then pinch the ends together while tapering them a bit to smooth and transition out the ends from the braiding pattern.
• When shaping the challah after it is done being braided, notice the directions of the curves of the braiding pattern. Help the challah hold it's shape by tightening & twisting the ends in the same direction of the curve to stabilize the shape further. You can get a better picture of this in the video above!
Dough Reference: For 1 challah, I used 760 grams of dough & divided that evenly into 7 pieces for 7 strands. I rolled out each strand to about 12 inches in the first challah, and 14 to 16 inches in the second & third ones. Any length between 12 to 16 inches works very well to get a nice long pattern.
For challah toppings, leave it as is with an egg wash or get creative and use your favorite toppings! Or one of my favorites, lightly dusting & sifting flour over the challah right before baking! Whatever you choose will be beautiful! 💫
