THIS is why we need narration. Just watching someone do something sucks. Gotta understand the thought process. Good job mate keep em comin.

Hi Troopy, nice work. I am in the middle of setting up to build a similar mill. Will be using 15HP electric run of a VSD, i just got the blade and thought some of the guys on here might be interested, its a 5 tooth copy of the Lucas 546mm its made in Taiwan using teeth from EU the quality is every bit as good as Opteco according to my local dealer who sells opteco as well. The best bit is it was only $209 (Hervey Bay). I will try to get some pics/video throughout the build.

The blade is 425mm dia.I thought I would get a 7.5 inch cut. but with the diameter of the boss being 100mm I'm gonna get 6 inch. G/box ratio 1:1. I just fitted a 15hp 4 stroke, max rpm 3600, max torque produced at 2500 rpm. It says on the saw, optimum cutting speed 1800 to 3600 rpm. sounds about right to me. Just a note. If the saw doesn't have to be portable I would use a 15hp electric motor preferably 3phase. Direct drive to the blade. Save a lot of messing around. (uploading pt4 now)

Hi Troopy am in the process of making a mill following your design. I’m trying to figure out how you joined the blade shaft you had machined to the shaft on the bear co gear box. I’m also using a bear co gear box 7/8 shaft. What kind of coupler did you use? N does the coupler go through that bearing. Thanks for putting up the videos of your build. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated. And hi from Canada.

Hi Troopy, I am in the process of designing my mill, and you gave some good ideas for me. One suggestion is to have a backup to keep the blade hub from coming off the gearbox shaft if the set screws or whatever you have holding it on come loose. I was thinking a snap ring on the outside of the shaft. Also do you see any negatives with not having a clutch?

I used 100mm diameter pulleys. B section double belt. Both the same diameter to keep the gear ratio the same. You can change the diameter of the driven pulley or driving pulley to change the blade speed relative to the engine speed. I used 100mm pulleys cause the looked about the right size.

Hi hedspace I found that the grub screws on the bottom bearing hold it fine. As well as the grub screws on the actual shaft to gbox. But there's nothing like building in some extra safety features. I haven't had any probs not having a clutch. But I know a person building one in the states who is using a cam over idler pulley arrangement as a clutch/belt tensioner. Thanks and good luck. Send me some photos. Troopy.

That blade is an Opteco manufactured copy of a Lucas 6" mill. I would have bought a genuine Lucas blade but they won't sell you one if you don't have a Lucas saw. Opteco are manufactured in Victoria Australia and sold through sawmill suppliers. I. Don't know if you can buy them internationally.

Hi Troopy, Nice mill you've made there! Do you remember the layout of the bolt holes in the Lucas 425mm blade? As far as I can see it's 4xM8 but I can't tell the distance/cross measure. Thanks for sharing. Christian

This might be stupid question but I have to ask...is it necessary to put a bearing between gearbox and blade? Would it work without bearing or is too far is span between the two?
@dnomyarnostaw

I would say yes. There is a lot of pressure to overcome.

190 sounds cheap. Those opteco blades are$375 over here. Boags long necks. They were on special. Made from the crystal clear waters of Tasmania they say.

Hi Yosef. I it made by a machine shop one end to fit the blade. The other end to fit the shaft on the gearbox. Made from stainless. Can't remember what grade. Worked fine.

I cooked my blade by letting the sawdust build up under the horizontal blade guard, while cutting timber a log that was bigger than the blade. After I modified the guard to let the sawdust out easier there were no probs & fit some kind of lubrication device. Use water or diesel or something. I had the blade repaired all good now.
