Why in UK can't build that kinda saving space with modern design. Amazing job man.

It's easier for beginners to understand when explained that the landing serves as one of the tread/riser combinations.

Good point and I talk more about that in my book, How To Build And Frame Stairs With Landings.

Excellent video. You align the nosings of the lower and up stair sections whereas I see a lot of plans that align the face of the risers instead. Why do you align the nosing and which is more traditional style?
@stairbuilding

I think what you're asking would depend on the project and should contact the building designer to verify what the tread lines represent. In my example, it's the nosing or farthest point forward on each step.

Best video I've watched so far, I have a standard staircase I must chop in half and insert a half landing with a couple of steps in that, it's also 11.5 steps exactly which adds to the confusion, where does the half step go? As its a trip hazard

If you need more room for longer stairway, try to find it, but don't make the landing or the step shorter.

Hi, I have a U shaped set of stairs. We currently have a door under the landing to the kitchen. I have 2 supporting posts on each side of the doorway. I am trying to find out, without paying for a quote if it is possible to remove one of the structural columns for the landing without compromising the integrity of the landing. This is the only post I would want to remove and wonder if a beam would be sufficient replacement? Is this possible?

I won't be able to help, the last thing I want to do is tell you to remove something that will create engineering problems.

16d nails to attach ledger or would you need some structural screws? Thanks! Your videos are outstanding.

If it made you feel better, then go ahead with the structural screws, but I don't think they would be necessary on practically any landing less than 4' x 8' wide and for private dwelling or residential home. This might change on public stairs or stairs supporting lots of weight.

Great Video. I asked the same question in a different video. The lower flight sits on a wood floor. This means the underneath joists are either parallel to the stringer or perpendicular. I believe the life and dead loads of the stairs are transferred to the thrust block at the bottom and then to the wood floor. the question is: Do you provide any extra support for this ?
@stairbuilding
5 жыл бұрын
A properly designed stairway should have all of the necessary support at the bottom, but I have personally built hundreds of them with the joist running in both directions and rarely was there any additional support, so it might not be a big deal. The structural design of the floor and the stairway and the building use will have a lot to do with whether or not additional support will be required also.

I bought this book and I have a question. For a u shaped staircase you mention a 4x6 for the bottom ledger to support the 2nd flight of stringers. Can I sister 2 pieces of 2x6 lumber instead? I prefer this method over hangers but can’t find 4x6 lumber . Thanks !

I'm currently remodeling my stairs from this u shape to an l shape. However I have a wall on the open side in your video which goes to a landing up top where you can look down on the stairs. Can I remove that wall?

As long as it's not supporting anything, then it might be able to be removed. If you want to send me a picture for more information.

Do you need the double top plate on the wall that supports the landing?
@stairbuilding
5 жыл бұрын
It would be good if the landing joist set on top of the single wall framing top plate directly over the wall framing studs. You can always use a small strap to connect the wall framing to other wall framing top plates if needed.

Wish you would have shone the correct way. Where the nosing of the landing lines up with nosing of the first tread toward the 2nd floor. (spent near 100.00 on your books and still looking.)

One problem I see. In our area the back landing must be supported just as the front is in the video. They won't let us nail to the wall studs for landing support due to the sheer strength requirements.
