far out man that is so sick! definitely one species i would like to land one day especially on my south african style gear haha like how you presented your crab baits its like how the brits do it but that rubber band method is smart as !
@Fishingreminder

thanks mate, appreciate the feedback. Yeah I really like the rubber band method. Adapted that from live baiting. Without rubber bands the shells tend to break easily and also you don't get the best hook exposure if you hook them through the leg sockets.

@@Fishingreminder i would use the dingle dangle method but i still need more experience with crab baits maybe we could do a video together where you teach me how to use crabs for bait haha maybe land some rigs at it

that be awesome mate, LOL. We should catch up next time when I'm up in Auckland. Snapper and Gurnard love crabs as well. I caught quite a few with crabs and often they have lots of crabs in their stomachs.

Hi Leigh, I think the smaller ones are actually better for eating than the large ones. Similar to other fish. A big old snapper isn't quite as tasty and sweet as a young pannie. Same goes for elephant fish. How big was the one you caught?

Yep we catch them off docks all the time. Usually by accident targeting other species. Never hooked one off a boat now that I think about it.

You're welcome. Hope the tips help. Winter is not a good time to catch them on the East Coast though. You'll probably catch mainly Spiny Dogs at Amberley at this time of the year. Maybe some red cod. For elephant fish and rig you'll have much better chances in early summer.

Thank you. I have some videos on catching crabs. The best places to catch them are shallow tidal sandy beaches. Gotta wait for a calm day and use a crab pot. If they are there it doesn't take long to catch them. Have a look on my previous vid about paddle crabs.

Used to catch plenty of these in South Africa, where they're called St Joseph sharks I think...white mussels worked great for these on the West Coast in SA back in the day. Didn't know they were here in NZ. Very cool.

Awesome. Are they regarded as good eating fish in SA?
@therealrelationshipguy

@@Fishingreminder was one of my grandad's favourites (he was both a recreational and commercial fisherman most of his life). Good for curry fish or crumbed in the pan. However, SA has a LOT of good eating fish, so they're not targeted as such as far as I'm aware. People go after other species like Steenbras, Mosselkraker, Galjoen, Kabeljou, and of course, Cape Snoek (kinda like the NZ Baracuda).

@@therealrelationshipguy Nice! I like them baked with parmesan crumbs on top. Always comes out beautiful. Taste a bit like rig. The smaller specimen taste much better than the larger ones.
