I needed some standoffs for a project, I was going to use a friend's lathe to make them but had seen a few people chucking the stock in their drill press and holding the drill bit in the tool vise. The only thing I didn't like was having to centrepunch the stock as I am very good at centrepunching things in the wrong spot, so I worked out a method to spot drill the stock close enough to the centre of the rod. This method is definitely not new, but I didn't see anyone using it in the videos I found of this process.
It also means that nothing has to be lined up very accurately besides making sure the stock is reasonably centred in the chuck which is pretty easy to.
It isn't perfect but is pretty good, and worth a try.
The "parting off" method is pretty agricultural but again, little measuring is required and it is easy to cut a number of pieces to the same length.
Негізгі бет how to centredrill and part off steel rod/barstock quick and easy without a lathe in a drill press.
