I want to say thank you for this video. I also have a Juki. Was always wondering about proper home cleaning. Your video is the only one I have found that covers basics. I followed your advice plus more. I have made about 8 quilts without cleaning, only oiling. OMG, my machine was dirty. Well, it's clesn now, thanks to you!!

My mom used to say that the more you used your machine the less it needed to be oiled, but I haven't found that to be true since I have started quilting. Keeping it oiled more frequently keeps it running smoothly and quietly. I never knew there were machines that needed to be unscrewed to access under the face plate. It pops right out on my Elna once I open the bobbin area. I see you have your machine on the same table I bought for mine! My machine is also narrower than the lowered opening but I butt it up all the way to the left, and keep what I call my "drawer" (a multipocketed craft bag) and other doodads on the right side, where I have covered the hole with a plastic place mat. If I need more surface to hold a big quilt I pull out my card table to extend my surface to the left. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do when the sewing room is also the master bedroom. I am grateful to have a supportive husband, but it does mean I have to put things away every night!

Thank you for showing where and how much oil for this machine! User maintenance is so important, but servicing every 3 to 6 months is completely different. When you take your machine in to have it serviced they completely tear down the machine and replace the grease (not oil) for specific parts of the machine. This grease is not the same as the oil added by us. Over time lint and thread bits get caught up in that grease and it needs to be removed. Regular servicing where a tech cleans and replaces that grease and makes sure everything is working properly helps to lengthen the life of the machine. Also, having a certified technician do the work means you're not breaking the warranty on the machine.
@LeahDay

Yes, I completely agree! Brushing out the lint and oiling the machine is great to keep it running smoothly, but all machines need a regular servicing every year.

Hi Leah, thank you for this video. I have one question though, the manual for the Juki 2010Q says to oil it on the hook by the bobbin area and I can't for the life of me figure out what they're talking about. I open up the side and remove the bobbin case and I'm looking at the picture they provide and it's some kind of hook that needs to be oiled. Can you explain to me? thank you - Liza
@LeahDay

Sorry about that Liza! The hook is the round part that rotates around the bobbin. I actually had a section of video showcasing this part, but the camera malfunctioned and it got deleted.

Leah, I have a Janome machine that has a "wick" under the bobbin case. How often would you recommend adding oil to the wick? The manual does not show oiling the machine at all. Thanks for ALL your advice!
@LeahDay
9 жыл бұрын
I would first google it to see if a Janome dealer or rep has posted tips. Second place I'd check is with your dealer or machine repairman for advice. Personally I would probably apply 3-5 drops of oil to it whenever I'm brushing out the machine and oiling everywhere else, but that's just my opinion!

I have a Pfaff Ambition 1.0 and the owners manual says no lubrication is required. My dealer said that they oil it when you have it serviced. As I use that machine for FMQ as well as piecing. How often do you think I should have it serviced? They said as a general rule I should have it done once a year but if I'm quilting should I have it done more often? Thanks for your advice!

Thx for posting the tutorial . Any thoughts on the use of " Thread Magic " ?
@LeahDay
4 жыл бұрын
Just ran a search for it and don't really like the idea of it. My worry is the thread would be covered in that gummy stuff and then attract dirt to the quilt. Can it be washed out? That's what I immediately think of when considering adding something like that so no, it's not something I recommend.

Leah is it ok to vacuum vs the canned air? I would think it would pull out lint better than brushing...?
@LeahDay
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, a vacuum with tiny attachments can work. You might still need to brush a bit to bring some small bits out to where they can get sucked up. I often oil my brush and use that to brush out the machine, then clean it, apply more oil and brush it out again to get all the lint out. It ends up cleaning and oiling the machine at the same time!

Hi Leah! Thanks a million for this video. I try to keep my machine clean and use new needles, but I really like the idea of have a "2 bobbin" rule. I have a Janome 7700 and there is NO instruction on where to oil. I know you had this machine (and loved it!) and was hoping you could guide me on where to oil it. I bought a generic singer oil from Walmart. Is that okay? Thanks Leah, you are the best!
@LeahDay
9 жыл бұрын
On that machine I would open up the top left side and look for the little holes on the gears and apply one drop of oil to each. I'd then place a drop on the needle bar where it goes in and out of the top of the machine. Down in the bobbin I would place oil in the center of the disc below the bobbin case and one drop on the metal bar that moved back and forth way in the bottom (you can see it if you turn the hand wheel slowly). Please understand this is just a description of how I oiled that machine - not advice or a guarantee that this is the right thing to do! I would check with your Janome dealer to be absolutely sure this is a good idea!

Unfortunately, no. So I "defuzzed it", oiled it, changed needle. Still sounds like a motor with problems. I've only had it 2 weeks and I don't use it hard. In fact, I was only sewing to pieces of fabric together. It sews great for about 10 inches, then makes a terrible sound. I am going to rethread it today. Maybe that is what it needs. I never had problems with Singers. @@LeahDay

Thank you for your wonderful tutorials. You have truly been an inspiration to me. What needles are you using on your Juki for free motion quilting? I have been using the needs that came with my machine, but I noticed yesterday that it seemed like the needle was piercing my quilt. And that just doesn't seem right to me. Do you know how I can fix this? I have the Juki 2010q as well. Thank you & Merry Christmas
@LeahDay

I use Schmetz Universal 80/12 needles in my Juki. I played with top stitch, embroidery, quilting, and microtex and these worked the best with the least amount of skipping stitches. As for piercing the quilt - do you mean creating large holes in the fabric? You may just need to go down one size so the holes are smaller.

I like the f600 and will be testing it tomorrow . so I guess the bottom line question is harp. I know a queen can be done on a 8 inch harp might not be comfortable but on the 8900 it is? is the janome the machine you use most often? I will be trying several machines tomorrow . I just want your thoughts on the one machine you think can do it all. I only have room for 3 machines and that is storing one. lol thanks again for taking the time out of your very busy schedule . I would like to point out as to not give your technician a bad rap, that they are not just oiling these points. These points are intended for the consumer to oil, but there are areas and bushings that cannot be accessed without removing the covers. Technicians also can spot irregularities or wear on machines when they come in for servicing. I realize that every shop is different, but I know that I check these things as well as buff out scuffs in your hook, bobbin case, or needle plate that can catch your threads as they are passing through. Removing solidifying grease and cleaning out parts that carbon is starting to build up. But PLEASE for a TL2010Q do not try and remove the top unless you know about the lock. I've seen husbands embarrassingly come in after trying to do it themselves. I'm sure there is information out there on how to properly remove covers.

Yes, but my machines only see the repair man once a year. This much lint can accumulate in 1-2 weeks depending on how much you use the machine and what type of thread you're working with. Very linty threads can throw off enough dust to lock up a machine. It's better to get into the habit of brushing it out yourself!
