I searched for how to cut clean holes in plaster and lath and couldn't find an answer I was convinced would work. Here's the process that worked well for me, using a combination of a dremel and two hole saws. I should have noted in the video that a carbide hole saw would work well on the plaster as well; the drawbacks of carbide is that a 3.5 inch will cost around $75, and also the coarseness of the teeth may be a little too much for brittle plaster to handle. I didn't try this approach, so can't speak to it. As always, make sure you take proper safety precautions before trying this -- I don't cover these here.
Here is a link to the Hole Pro I mention. It has two cutting blades and a dust shield that can be hooked up to a shop vac. Have not used it, but it looks like it may work well. www.holepro.com/powerseries.html
