I first heard of you guys over 20 years ago! Now that my children are grown, and after all the financial reversals in the recession, I'm trying to build up my retirement savings and I've committed to spending $100 a month on food. Been re-reading America's Cheapest Family and Cut Your Grocery Bill in half and I actually think I can do it. Thanks for the inspiration and all the great tips!

Love the hand basket idea for non-list items...I try to guesstimate how much my groceries will be ahead of time but have on occasion thrown a few things in that weren't. It's amazing how those extra things can add up and alarming at how quickly they can sabotage a well intended budget. This is a tip I am implementing in my grocery shopping from now on. Thanks so much!

I am not cheap and I do most of these things naturally. I do not buy organic but I buy from my local farmers market. Also I live in Switzerland where food I hella expensive, that’s why my partner and I shop in Italy it’s a lot cheaper. We freeze loads of things especially fruit and vegetables. If we don’t have any food in our fridge we always know we have tons of food in our freezer. We don’t impulse buy, we don’t buy junk food, we don’t drink soft drinks just our swiss plain delicious tap water and we home cook everything. We don’t do It to save money we just live responsibility, we have a very lavish life we can afford holidays 5 times a year and sometimes even more. It just works well. Our Facebook friends always wonder where we get all that money for travelling.
