Cung Le is one of the best side kickers ever. Most people think of Stephen Thompson, but Cung Le has better kicks. He also feints a left cross while simultaneously switching his stance to throw a spinning side kick from an orthodox stance.

My Master (Tang Soo Do) was a US nationally ranked kickboxer in the '80s and was really good at getting people's hands up before front-leg side kicking them in the ribs. Part of it was the slide / step-up instead of shuffle step. Also, that "scoop" is the practical application of a standard low block. I know that you know that, it's just cool to Karate's practical applications since they apparently don't exist... or something.

Sidekick to me is like jab but with the feet, it's kinda too obvious to use as a power shot. I learned from Sanda guys that they used the sidekick alot as a set up for a sweep or takedown and that method resonated with me alot. When you can't feint high with the hands, a crappy low power sidekick to the knee cap or the body is a great distraction to shoot in for a single leg, especially if the other guy tries to check it.

Before I watch this, lemme say this: I’ve sparred a lot against karate guys and the likes and for some reason, throwing a hook to the foot stops the side kick. It’s highly inefficient, looks goofy, but I mean, if you’re fast with the hands and movement, it can work

@@UnexpectedBob depends on the sport. In kickboxing it's probably a no no, but in MMA it's complicated. @@Leadfoot_P71 I mean I do that already. The problem is that I struggle to land shots against guys that can use them. I am much more comfortable on punching range. I don't love the scoop and throw very much because I feel like if someone had more of a karate style, you'd just be throwing their leg to set them up for a second, more powerful side kick. With that being said, you'd probably see it coming but still, I feel like dodging is probably a better option most of the time, or maybe a parry and dodge together. With all that being said, it's just my armchair observations, and not the thoughts of a six time world champion. Thank you for the tips! They'll certainly be helpful for me to incorporate
