Went from E46 M3, was thinking of jumping to F80, waaaay to big and heavy, then M2, still almost as heavy, then maybe E90, still too freaking heavy and even tho slightly quicker than E46, not big enough jump to really want to move to that either. Exact experience here. Went from Huracan to a GT3 RS...there is no comparison. No brake fade, traction control allows you to slightly oversteer without losing confidence, tires much cooler after a cool down lap. Entire track days no issue without drop off in performance, except for tires, which was still manageable and predictable.

Good film. I am a specialist 911 driver with considerable experience in GT3 cup cars. If you can’t trail brake to threshold all the way into apex - ie: continually balancing oversteer and understeer - you will not be competitive. It’s more difficult than it sounds as essentially you are on the edge of an accident from turn in to apex. Taking things a step further, you need to constantly adapt your technique around variables such as diff and brake bias set up, tyre wear etc. the fundamental is of course set up. It is essential to ensure that your 911 has a set up applied by a respected 911 race specialist before venturing on track. These can be applied from ‘soft’ to ‘sharp’ depending on your preferences and experience. Good film. Well done

@@speedepic I’m SURE they do. Trust me when I say I was moved. Here’s some context: I purchased a built to order 2022 Macan GTS last year. It was my first Porsche and my first brand new car. I never in a million years imagined that I’d ever own a Porsche. I just never had any desire nor affinity towards sports cars. In the fall of 2021 I went out on a whim and began window shopping for my dream car of over 20 years: the G Wagen. That was put on hold when I learned of the chip shortage, dealer markups, etc. Then I remembered and re-watched a Ted Talks episode with Magnus Walker. His life story inspired me. I then did a search on Porsche reviews and was shocked to see that C&D ranked the Macan a 10/10 EVERY year since it was released. So I watched my first Macan review: Autogefuel’s review of the 2022 Macan GTS. Within 60 seconds I was entranced. I could not believe that Porsche, this company that’s been under my nose my whole life, builds their cars to this level of quality. The seed was planted in good soil and watered. I then got an allocation and ordered a GTS. I finally got it in June, 2022. Week 2 we took it on a road trip from NYC to Montana. Left with 555 on the ODO and returned with 7800. That’s when the love affair began. My GF and I have since done several road trips including NYC to Moab, UT, where I took it soft-roading where I again had the time of my life and had it covered in red mud. We drove up to mile 13 of Pike’s Peak on the way home-the rest was closed due to high winds. We had the mountain practically to ourselves! I also did Tail of the Dragon twice. I’ve put 32,000 miles on this amazing machine in 13 months. 32,000. I’ve had MANY smiles per gallon. I’ve taken it on 400-mile solo drives on twisty roads nearby the NYC area. The Macan GTS was the gateway drug. I just bought my dream car and hit the road with it the other day: a 992 C2GTS cabriolet! I nearly had tears of joy during my 350-mile solo trip as I embarked on this second love affair yesterday. I’m absolutely in love. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences. It’s meant a lot to me and had tremendously inspired me.

Great chat gentlemen, and an approach that’s talked about so little. Richard Tuthill describes the 911 as “the thinking man’s sports car”. So true. As much as Porsche continue to engineer out the rear biased idiosyncrasies, it’s still there, and it’s still joyous when one knows how to drive a 911 “properly”. Even my old 991.2 felt so special when trail braking was used (some older videos on my channel show it versus GT3s on track when driven how it was intended). Really enjoyed this chat gents!

This is great stuff that I don’t think I’ve every heard anyone else talk about outside Karting, but that trailbraking, and getting the chassis to rotate and getting back on throttle with full confidence that you have just enough slip angle that your aren’t going to screw anything up (hit a barrier). I don’t think anyone that is driving 8/10ths on the street only ever gets this at all. They have no idea how incredible it feels. The corner entry understeer is horrible, but it’s because people don’t know how to drive the car, the physics involved and they panic and lift, causing even more understeer and think that the car sucks to drive hard.

I can't speak to your many experiences because I only have the hundred or so laps at Barber at PTX and do not own a Porsche. But my history in FF and autocross did give some level of preparedness for the 911 in terms of trail braking. Your conversation mirrors my experience in the GTS. The 911 is almost playful, even intuitive. And while you can feel the rear bias, especially through the corkscrew, just like your guest, I was laughing at the experience. The 911 almost begs for abuse. It is no wonder that the 911 is probably the last true aspirational car. At least for me. Thanks.

Today i found out my Elantra N is a FWD Porsche 😂..On serious terms I drove around 12 hrs to the track roundtrip on stock pads, no overheating issues so far either. Additionally the driving dynamics are similar (in a very loose way); as in it rotates under hard braking and will understeer if you push it so the best way is to trailbrake and let the LSD work it out post apex.

This is such a great video and something all 911 owners should watch! I know you touched on drivers aids but definitely worth talking about is rear axle steer and the AWD variants... My previous 911.2 4S definitely felt like a pendulum in quick cornering and has much more understeer... but my current 911.2 C4GTS with RAS legitimately feels like a mid engine car, very similar to the 718 GTS. The real difference I've found between the 718 vs the 911 is the corner exit speed, the 911 with AWD missiles out of bends as the power is shifted through the front as you straighten out.

I don't understand. You should trail brake in every car on the track. That's how you get through the corner quicker. With a front engined car you may need less, because you have weight already over the axel, but that's how you get the front end to grip.
@speedepic

in a 911, trail braking is used to shift weight so you can rotate the rear of the car and position the car in the corner.

@@speedepic but don't you do that on any car on a track - porsche or not?
@KosmicHRTRacingTeam
Жыл бұрын
@@sanglemaltno. Normally you brake in a straight line, allowing as much weight to shift to the front of the vehicle (braking as late as possible) which increases the effectiveness of your turn in which allows you to aggressively rotate the car and get it pointed in a straight line again as soon as possible. It’s hard to explain, in a 911, you are trailbraking almost intentionally disrupting the balance of the chassis, but you really aren’t, it’s just a feeling you get when it rotates and the bites. It’s hard to describe unless you are on track to do it and experience it. Makes the car feel much more lively and playful, which is truly unique to the 911.
@sanglemalt
Жыл бұрын
You do most of your braking in a straight line, yes. But the whole 101 course on track driving is to ease off the brake into the turn into the apex. That is trail braking. We are talking about the same thing. I am just amazed that what I thought was fundamental ALL cars was highlighted almost feeling unique in driving the Porsche. It was what I was taught in my golf, my Audi s3 and my subsequent mid engined cars. I thought you were going to talk about having a bit more lift off mid corner to help the rear turn a bit more and balance that. That is clearly different with the pendulum effect in mid engine and rear engine cars that front engine. I haven’t driving a Porsche on a track - though I have done Camp4 and Camp4S in Canada. The rear engine layout didn’t do it for me on the ice - much preferred the balance of the cayman as the car turns around you. That is just a personal thing because I’m used to mid engined cars. I’m not trying to be a smartarse or give you grief. I hope you didn’t take it that way. I guess I was after a bit more information in comparison to a front engine and mid engine car and perhaps how the car setup is different. Thank you for your answer.

You can technically trail brake on any capable vehicles.... i dont believe in only porsches can utilize it to the fullest, its mostly the fact that P cars really need to have weight in the front in order turn. Hence caused by trail braking, cus youre throwing the weight to the front. Thing i like about P cars is how safe it feels on corner exit. Once the car hooks out of the apex, you dont really need to think about the rear not getting enough traction, cus essentially all your weight is in the rear. However, i do not like P cars in a long stint situation. Where you can shift the weight balance based on how much fuel you use, which cause you to change the brake bias, or just do more trail braking.

For sure. I think Jeff is the only one in our crew with a bunch of experience and knowledge in that regard. He has recently bought several more aircooled Pcars. We need to get him back on the podcast soon!

None of this is relevant to the driving experience of anyone who isn't pushing these cars to 10/10s. The guest clearly knows his stuff, but the other two don't even know enough (or didn't prepare) to coax his knowledge out with relevant questions or direction. Randy Pobst did more than half the job for you guys in a recent vid abt the 992.2 GT3RS. Owning a Porsche isn't enough for you to steal 20 mins of ppl's time guys, do better.

Notice that a lot of people enjoyed the topic and liked the fact that we brought up the conversation. If you created content, you'd have noticed that my intent was to get Jeff to talk. It worked. People liked the topic. Maybe you missed the point or more likely you're just a miserable dbag. Where is your content? Let's see you offer up something useful? No? Didn't think so.

Isn’t is nice to just hear more than one perspective from people that own the vehicles? The intent was simply to hear Jeff’s thoughts on all the cars he’s owned and why he loves them. You wanna know about the other 9/10ths of driving a Porsche, just go grab a brochure and check out what all the buttons on the center console do.

@@speedepic How does the car behave on the limit vs spirited driving (idk 7-8/10th ish?) What is the engineering philosophy that gives 911s their unique handling characteristics? Is there an obvious trajectory to the evolution of that philosophy? Would previous 911 experience prepare you for the latest iteration? Is the transition from threshold braking to trail braking different within the 911 family (AWD Turbo vs RWD RS)? Is there a tell-tail characteristic to activate these dynamics/ How does this differ from other MR / RR cars Jeff has driven on the limit? I don't doubt your intentions, but the content of this video is misrepresented by its title. The ppl who tell you different either don't like you, or don't want you to succeed. the production quality is to be envied. you guys got a good thing here, but you can't fake the funk.

Ok this is a Porsche commercial. You trail brake at the track in ALL cars. This is nonsense.

lol. Having the weight in the back of a Porsche makes the physics (and the driving experience) completely different. If you ever own one, you would understand this very clearly. Cheers!!

@@howellwes Your statement has nothing to do with mine. In the video the actor says only 911’s can trail brake in turns. That’s ludicrous because you trail brake in every car and motorcycle on track. I have plenty track experience. I bought a 2017 Porsche Macan S that I had three years and it was garbage. I’m not wasting any more money on Porsche.

It has everything to do with your statement. First of all, you say it's a commercial. It's not. We have no association with Porsche. We are just fans and owners of Porsches. This is our little place where we can share our opinions. In your comment, you also say "it's nonsense because "All cars trail brake" If you had the track experience and had owned all the cars that Jeff has owned you wouldn't refer to his comments as nonsense. He didn't base his opinions on owning one mid-level Porsche SUV. He's owned race cars, 50+ Porsches, Super Trofeos, etc. He's talking about the unique driving dynamics, rear weighted bias and characteristics of a 911. I'm actually surprised by just how much you missed the point. You've never even owned a 911, right? But whatever - Your comment was nonsense. Sounds like this channel doesn't work for you and that's ok. You've got plenty of options! Best of luck to you.

Newer Porsches are a lot better than the old ones. If you leave the drivers aids on as a new driver with a little common sense there isn't much to worry about! Now an air cooled Pcar... that's a different matter!
