*FOR YOUR GARDENIA.* An old trick from author Ruth Stout (Organic gardening author from the 1970's) is put plain, ungalvanized large nails in your potted gardenia's soil. It truly releases iron and keeps your gardenia happy. My gardenia grew SO big it was the size of a sliding glass patio door. It got so big it would not fit through the door to put it outside for summer.

Great info! Can you show how you do chop and drop. How small are the pieces, and what tools do you use? Thank you!

Yulia, this was so helpful. I was never sure if plants should be watered prior to fertilizing. Listing your products is very helpful, also your Amazon store. I think I hurt a few plants with a synthetic fertilizer, especially some grasses. Also, I think I killed my potted gardenia with synthetic fertilizer or “death by drowning.” Oh well, I’ll try again. I want so much to have a gardenia and our soil is too alkaline for in-ground. My son suggested to plant in a pot, hmm.

I've drowned a few plants this year as well! I keep reminding myself that I'm learning and that it takes time.

I know you said this was just a cursory explanation, but it was more comprehensive than I've seen elsewhere. I definitely need to up my fertilizing game. I was only fertilizing in the spring.

Explain Chop and drop! I have a pile of cut back Shasta daisies, petunias, begonias. The pile is just on the patio drying up. How long should the chopped pieces be?

When you fertilize the garden phlox, do you water them first or after or not at that time? Very helpful information. Thank you.

There’s a brand I randomly happened upon once that I wish I could easily find in stores…Down To Earth. Pretty sure all their products are in paper packaging, which is a major win. So tired of all the plastic 😩 Only issue with using organic granular is that we have raccoons and other animals that like to come through and dig things up in search of the foul smell of these fertilizers. Liquid works better for me in this case. If I do use granular at the time of planting I’ll cover with a cloche and garden staples, and then once it’s grown a bit I’ll use liquid. This is just vegetables I’m talking about.

I really think manufacturers including those of organic fertilizers recommend using much more fertilizer than you really need…. I use considerably less for the most part with considerable success
