Great fix, sweet frock. Looks like 1940s? I grew up in the 50s and love this era, clothes were feminine, tailored, my mother and her sisters sewed and looked like fashion models when they went out, so glamorous.

Brilliant tutorial. I would far rather mend a garment with a hole than throw it away. So useful for today garments that have poorly made fabric & the holes caused due to weakness in the warp & not moths!

Oh, the heartbreak of moth holes. If I could sew I would totally employ these tricks. I actually posted one of your Thrift to Vintage videos to the Ultimate Fashion History Facebook group the other day because I was overjoyed to see a skilled person doing what I wish I could when I try to augment my wardrobe. It's all so impressive, as well as the production value on the videos themselves. I subscribed and will keep representing for this channel!!!

Awww thanks so much!! I really appreciate the share and support! I am glad that you love watching! I think 'thrift to vintage' transformations are so valuable for any vintage style wearer, and easy way to get started and a great way not to ruin the 'real' delicate vintage for every day wear! Well if you are ever ready to learn, I do run an online course on exactly how to do this! xx

I appreciate that! I have a basic sewing machine in my extremely cluttered "office". Since I have to unclutter the office anyway to use to teach English online, I tell myself that I will also magically have room to get to grips with the sewing machine. Fingers crossed. I have all these very specific ideas and I can draw what I want, but making stuff is quite a different skill. :-0 I did want to ask: Would you say that altering things in more structured fabric and tailoring to shorter people is significantly more difficult than any other alteration? I have it in my head that it is. Basically I like things that have kind of a 40's fit, having long since accepted that the stereotypical 50's silhouette is not for me. A-lines, princess seams, things good for a short high-waisted person with narrow shoulders: these are my style expectations at this point.
@Evelyn__Wood
6 жыл бұрын
I would say structured fabrics are much easier!! And the fact that you have to narrow shoulders, take up hems, make a waist shorter, these re all taking/ shortening, which is much easier! As opposed to trying to lengthen or make bigger, that is hard! I think you only think it is harder because that's what you have to do! With altering, you really just need to get and learn how to evaluate it and fit it and the process to take, so you do everything in the correct order and make your life easy!

You could use double-sided fusing to add in the perfect little yellow flower piece on the white part of the new "hole". Then the changing thread color won't matter.

Hello Evelyn, I've finally started to learn how to use my sewing machine and I discovered you and your videos 3 days ago and I can NOT put my laptop down! your such a joy to watch and I've leant so much! I live in the UK so have never experience moth holes before, I have a dress I got in a vintage sale, the label says it from the US, It was too small for me but I could not go home without it! it had holes in the bottom that I now realise were moth holes! I wish I found this video 2days ago! I cut the whole section out 9 x 9cm and replace it with fabric I got from a bow I removed from the dress....was this wrong?

One thing id suggest with vintage fabrics is to sew dress liners inside them to protect from sweat. I work with vintage fabric and it does weaken and split. Another thing, dont machine sew patches! Its a huge pain but you can make teeny stitches by hand with fine thread.

Any idea how to fix moth holes in an Edwardian mesh embroidered antique over gown? No one seems to address this. They just have the cut up petticoat mesh and replace section type of fixes which is not an option for the gown.
@Evelyn__Wood
6 жыл бұрын
Sorry Kiki G ive never repaired Edwardian net before and I would think it would be something you need to see to first as it would depend on the size of hols and the design of the dress!
@Vampkiki
6 жыл бұрын
The holes are mostly on the back side of the dress, about half a dozen ones slightly smaller than an American dime in circumference. I have seen the wedding dress mesh net repairs, which say to cut and replace as the mesh is on the underside of the wedding gowns, but that is not an option for this as they are mostly eyelevel on the shoulder area of the back by the hook and eye closures. The front has the embellishments of the embroidery and piping, so is easier to hide a repair. But the clean line of the back will definitely noticable. A bit perplexed what to do from here.

So clever! I'm a beginner sewer. Could you use interfacing to repair a tear in velvet? I bought a vintage dress which has a tear at the back of each shoulder.
@Evelyn__Wood
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Bec, Thankyou! Yes, you can use this method for any tear also. the only problem with velvet it that you will likely flatten the pile of the fabric when you iron on the fusing, This means that the 'furriness' to the velvet will be flattened and marked when you iron it, as it is not meant to be pressed flat. Also, I fear that the stitching will be very noticeable in velvet! It is a tricky fabric to work with! Perhaps you could use this method to repair so it does not fray anymore, and then cover it with something decorative, like a lace motif, or applique of some kind to make it look nice! I hope this answers you question! Evelyn xx

hello!!! i love the tutorial... do you have any suggestions for a 1920's dress that ripped right up the back when i went to buckle my shoe? there's no extra fabric there, but maybe in the hem... i might put a zipper in the back if i can!!! very fragile fabric. also, i have a beautiful beaded(lots of weight) sleeveless 1920's dress which is having some issues in the shoulders, and i'd like to reinforce them...? thank you for your videos!!!
@Evelyn__Wood
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Gillian, thanks for watching! It is really hard to say with seeing the items, but if the rip down the back is centered enough, can you repair it by making a seam the whole way to enclose the tear? And maybe you can hand sew in some cotton voile under the shoulders to give that area more stability? To the back and baste the entire new layer to the old one? I hope that gives you a few ideas to consider anyway!

I have watched practically all of your videos, and not once have I seen you actually DO/SEW/DEMONSTRATE anything. In this video, you say "I'm going to show you how to machine." (whatever that's supposed to mean), but you don't show how to do anything. Shown here, you hold a pair of scissors to the fabric but we don't see you actually cut the fabric. The only cutting we see is when you cut to the finished product. What's up with that?
