So happy to get this info . I hope this works on Hydrangea plants because I just did it , they both had it way worse than what you showed in the video. should I buy that fungi that you talked about also trichoderma and put some in there. The plants both have some leaves , but thay were starting to die off and 1 still have new growth at the same time. I transplanted them when I first received them but not knowing what it looks like costs me. so had to transplant them back into smaller pots. It was over 100 for about a month here so I just kept them inside, because 1 day outside and they were so droopy. not even in doppled sunlight. any other tips for me to save them? and how soon and often should I water them ?

Hi! Thanks for the tips. I have adopted a birds nest fern that is severely root bound and has severe root rot. It has a lot of very healthy leaves but the newer leaves aren’t as healthy as the older leaves. If all roots are all brown (on the outside), will this method help? And with the severity of the root bind+rot, is it necessary to remove the rotted and bound roots?

Hi Camdon! If the roots are mushy black/brown and smell bad, cut them away and rinse them off with h202 (you’ll see bubbles on the rotting parts). Then, run water over the roots to remove dead parts and unbind as much as you can, and repot in a healthy mix! This will help a lot! Birds nest ferns can survive with very little roots! Hope this helps!

Does the pot have drainage? Alocasias should be kept moist, but not too dry, or have wet feet. If the spot is toward the center of the leaf, it is likely overwatering, and you can use peroxide to kill off any Pythium that might be attacking the roots! Hope this helps! -Chris

Hey Devin, I’m sorry to hear such an important plant has root rot :/ It’s great if you have 1 good root left. To start, get rid of the dead roots, and make sure any soaked dirt is removed. Then pour peroxide over the root mass and dirt and look for the bubbles-that’s where you rot is. Let it sit in that for 3 minutes, and rinse it back off with regular water. Next pot back with healthy soil, and get the soil damp, but not soaking wet. And only water the plant once it needs it (every 5-10days). Root rot comes from overwatering so just try and avoid that if you can :) I hope this helps!!!

What signaled me to look was a leaf that was not yellowing yesterday was yellowing today and I had not watered it recently. I pulled it out of its decorative pot and there was a funky smell to it. When I got it out of the nursery pot, the roots were so bound I was afraid to cut the dead parts out. Thank you for this video. If you have a really bad root rot issue it might need multiple treatments. But yes, water with this solution once your plant needs a drink, then let the soil dry. If it's a strong enough concentration, it should kill off the Pythium. But sometimes it might need to be used again to sterilize once more! Try and cut out dead roots too!

My fiddle leaf fig has a minor case of root rot. Still putting out new leaves but the bottom ones are blackening at the edges and dropping. Roots are a light brown and some are soft/a bit squishy. I just did this peroxide treatment but don't know if I should trim bad roots or not? Most fiddle people tell you to clean the root ball, trim roots, and repot. But I've seen that typically stress out the plant so much it drops all of its leaves :( does my plan seem like a good one since I don't have a desperate case?
@kristinwade8390

Oh! and they typically say to trim off all affected leaves. Does that seem necessary in your experience?
@prettyingreen

@@kristinwade8390 What I would do is: make sure you plant really needs what the next time you do water. And in that water, include hydrogen peroxide. Do this for the next 3-5 watering or so (goal is to kill off the pythium in the roots). If you do unpot the plant, do not trim any white/beige roots, but pull away the mucky/slimy black and brown ones with your hands. At this point you could pour some hydrogen peroxide directly on the root system (like a wound). Ideally, you could swap out the soil that's in the pot with a houseplant-specific potting mix, with additional perlite mixed in (maybe as much as 30-40%) No need to trim away affected leaves--the plant will do that on its own--and is only done for aesthetic reasons. Hope this helps! -Chris

@@prettyingreen Thanks for the advice! Planning to let it dry out some before I put it back in the pot (I took it out to check roots and do the peroxide treatment). I'll watch it for the next month or so and see how it does with the peroxide mix! Hopefully it won't need repotting since it is winter. I found out my plant was in a deadly plastic nursery pot with side holes 1/4inch up the sides. So I cut down the holes so they can drain and put some in the bottom. This way it can stay in the pot but get WAY more air and never sit in water again.

What will happen when i just cut off rotted roots and pot the plant again without using any disinfectant?
@prettyingreen

The Pythium will likely continue through to the rest of the roots eventually. The disinfectant helps to kill off the parasites that cause root rot.

@Pretty in Green I just saw this comment and about died. I've spent all week and $$$ repotting because despite good drainage, my soil was not drying ...like at all, even in smaller pots. I had used the appropriate MG "specialty" soils and mixed in orchid bark (which I now think was contaminated with gnats), thinking that would help keep the soil loose and drain better. It did not. I found the "bark" element was the soggiest part of all!!! This time, I just used the MG basic (NOT moisture control) indoor mix. In an effort to *really* decrease density/increase airflow for drying purposes, and also wanting to avoid the bark, with a VERY HEAVY hand, I mixed in MG perlite... not realizing it contains fertilizer! In all honesty, I simply do not have the time , money, or patience to redo this nonsense again. It makes me absolutely sick to even consider the possibility that I have sabotaged myself (yet again) and may lose my plants. Every time I try to better educate myself and act accordingly, the ultimate result is a reinforced feeling that plant life may not be for me....at all. Thoughts? Suggestions? Condolences in advance?
