In Australia timber is sold by the linear meter. Timber is priced by cubic meter. Also it's priced by the total length purchased, so 2 x 1.8m sticks cost the same as 1 x 3.6m.

I believe the pace that is south of Milwaukee that you were thinking of is Kettle Moraine Hardwoods. They used to have two location one a little south of Milwaukee and one northwest of Milwaukee. Two years ago they closed the location that is south of Milwaukee. The Urban Wood Lab moved into that location. The Urban Wood Lab is owned by Hoppe Tree service and sells mostly (maybe only I'm not sure) locally harvested wood from trees they have cut down.

Wish I'd seen the stream, but wanted to say that it might be helpful to think of dimensional lumber (2x4s etc) being sold by linear dimensions, but rough boards are sold by volume. Board feet is a measurement of total volume.
@jwydubak9673

Q: what would be the metric equivalent of a board foot? A: Cubic meter is the unit lumber is sold by in Poland (and I suspect in most Europe) Cubic meter is 35.31 cubic feet (424 board feet). Of course you may always buy fraction of a cubic meter. Not much experience but I suspect rounding is at two or three decimal places and It may depend on the price. More expensive wood will be measured and calculated more precisely, whereas no one will bother measuring a single 2.5x16 cm (cross section) pine construction board more precisely than 25 cm as difference in price today is $0.30. As far as construction lumber is concerned, there are several standard lengths and you always get a few centimeters more and you don't measure individual sticks, just check that no single one is too short.

In CR, the old way to mesure some wood, it’s called “pulgadas madereras ticas” ( pmt). 1 pmt is a board of 1” by 1” in 4 varas (33 inch) long

Good answer, tbh. I’ve noticed a lot of times that women in a men’s field, tend to think they get ignored through sexism, while more likely it’s just the way people get treated in general. Lots of male oriented stores and companies work on the basis of ignoring the customer, because that’s how men like to be treated. “Me strong, figure out meself!” The opposite is true in clothing stores. I always think I’m doing something wrong or get bullied out of stores, because the personnel keep following me around. I feel watched and can’t stand it. While my wife just starts conversations about all the clothes and how stuff looks on her. Unwritten rules can feel like prejudice to the uninitiated 😊

19:00 "50c to $1 a board foot" ... dream on. Here on the west coast, the only price I could find online was $6/bf for cedar or redwood slabs at a local sawmill and you can't throw a stone round here without hitting 4 or 5 redwoods before it hits the ground.

In the UK they tend to measure in mm/m but cost it by cubic feet. My last rough sawn tulipwood board (2.4x200x50), was by mail order, was invoiced at 1.01706336 cu ft. I think for waney boards they take an average of 3 width measurements before pricing (unless they're calling it a character board then they just think of s number) 🤪

The local (Albuquerque, NM) hardwood dealer will multiply (in inches) the L x W x Thickness (1.25 for 5/4, etc) then divide by 144. The result multiplied by the price per bf. this seems like the easiest and most reasonable way to do it. Most ‘Muricans can’t multiply fractions worth a darn!!! (I was impressed with your ability in that aspect!) Do hardwood lumber yards really do it the way you described where you are at?
@WoodByWrightHowTo

Some jerk posted 'free wood' with location of the Woodcraft store in the add and a photo of their scrap bin. So here comes my happy @$$ filling up bags of walnut, cocobolo, padauk, purple heart, ebony etc. almost shaking with excitement. By the time I had the bed of my truck loaded and 3/4 of their bin cleared out, here comes ol buddy quickly catching up to me to tell me that 'that wood isn't free!'. I showed him the post online and we shared a laugh.....Well I laughed and he graciously helped me to unload and fill the bin back up. I took one of my pitiful sacks inside to weigh and pay and 60 bucks later I sauntered out to my truck with my projects I had dreamed up minutes before crumbling into the abyss. I was almost 'that guy' but the joke was on me....

Wow you go to shady lumber suppliers. None of the ones I deal with round up at all. As for thickness, its always based on the actual nominal thickness. If it's 1 1/8" thick, that's 5/4 and what you pay for. If any hardwood dealer or lumber yard tried that rounding B.S. I'd take my business elsewhere.

I've only been to a hardwood dealer once (ended up buying a few hundred dollars worth of assorted boards for a few specific projects and then any other stuff that I might think of later) but they knocked off about a foot off of one of the walnut boards I bought because there was about four inches of wane (not sure the best way to word this) at one edge that would basically have lost me about half an inch in width off that one end. They also rounded one of my cherry boards down from like 6 3/4 bf to 6, which I thought was nuts. Honestly the only reason I haven't been back is that their hours are typical for a hardwood dealer, by which I mean awful for any hobbyist working a 9-5 (or 8-4, as in my case).
