Your gentle, well delivered videos are packed with all the information I wish I'd seen 50 years ago but 'better late than never'. I struggled with Lancashire's heavy clay, now have stone-packed variable soil and last year resorted to bottomless pots and ll sorts of daft composts. Now have just what I always needed, thank you Ken.

You are very kind. I am glad you find my videos useful I am never quite sure how to pitch them for a US audience because of your different time zones. I also get the impression that good sized clematis are not as easy to find and that the prices are higher. Is that so? Are there any particular videos that would be helpful to Gardeners’ in the USA? Ken

I had no idea that Avalanche had a reputation for not withstanding our UK weather. I have one growing on a north west facing border and it is beautiful and much admired. I am in central Scotland and it can get pretty cold here, though we had a milder than usual winter last year. My sister also has one - she has had hers for much longer and it has been glorious.

Yes I know of a friend who lives in the North East of England near the coast and he grows it at his front door. Flowers every year. There always are exceptions and I am glad that you are one of them. However, I have lost count of the number of people who claim to have been put off from growing any clematis because of purchasing a New Zealand hybrid that quickly died. The other reason that I don’t promote them is the price most garden centres sell them for. Almost a mortgage job! Have a good gardening year and thank you for putting forward an alternative point of view.

You are truly remarkable Ken, being able to grow clematises or κληνατίδες climatithes in greek. You should visit Corfu this month and enjoy the aroma of the forests with the wild clematis alba grown on top of olive trees and other bushes. A greek lady who was corresponding with Ptince Philip.

Hi Ken, do you have any suggestions on how to protect new shoots from earwigs? I have four Viticella Etoila Rose. Three in my front garden and one in my back garden. Every spring the new shoots on the one in the back garden are stripped bare by earwigs, eventually, the plant does grow but not as well as the plants in the front. Love your videos, look forward to seeing many more very informative. Thank you.

I don’t have much of a problem with earwigs thank goodness. There are ways to catch them if you google earwigs

Hi Ken, I have a fence about 20m long that I'm thinking of using armandii apple blossom as a wall of Clematis, planted in bottomless pots using your method here. I wonder, could you please tell me how far your armandii spreads or how far apart you'd recommend planting apple blossom?

Do you cut them back in the fall
@kenblackclematis8272

Shirley, these clematis don't need cutting back in the fall because they ned the whole year from when they fish flowering to build up buds for next year. If you do have one which is getting too big cut it back to the space you have immediately after it has flowered.
