Helping someone in psychosis is really hard. The challeges of being a support person for someone in psychosis is really hard. Getting someone in psychosis to the hospital and the proper treatment is almost impossible.
When Tiffany was committed last week the first time she gave me permission to speak with her nurses. I gave the nurses all the details to give to the doctor all about Tiffany's voices, her behavior, and everything that had happened and they STILL released her after only three days.
One thing people don't realize is or know is how incredibly difficult it is to get treatment for mental illness. YOU ARE NOT LUCKY if you are diagnosed young or put on the right medication right away and never experience the terror of psychosis or hypomania, YOU ARE A UNICORN..
The best way to help someone in psychosis is to get them to the hopital. There is so much that I left out but I tried to do a wellness check on Tiffany, I was ready to try anything to make sure she was safe but we can never tell the person they are crazy or the what they believe is not true because it is true to them. They are living that terrifying reality. It's just so hard for those of us trying to get help either for ourself or for someone else.
Tiffany's Aunt told me "I am not going down with the sinking ship that is Tiffany." Tiffany's
sister disowned her, her parents were dead, she had no one left, burned every bridge as they say.
I don't regret helping Tiffany get into the hospital and taking care of her pets.
I learned so much about psychotic illnesses and how to understand someone hearing voices. I learned how not to talk to someone in psychosis. I learned about friendship and just how devasting it is to watch our healthcare system repeatedly fail people with psychotic illnesses like bipolar or schizophrenia and their symptoms. I learned how people end up homeless from mental illness. I learned to see through the symptoms to the person. I don't regret it I learned too much and I met someone amazing animals.
