This worked for us for one summer but now they aren’t as scared to push the rope down with their legs and walk over. It’s still a great idea. For this summer I’m going to put one rope high and one low. Keeping fingers crossed it works! Thanks for the video!!

@@capercamper Glad it worked for you. I watched time and time again where the geese would just walk over, duck under, or help each other get over fence, string, or line. If you have the good stuff - the criminals will persevere.

I have a 5 acre pond in upstate New York which attracts 40+ geese each year, and they walk up onto an acre of lawn, eat the grass and defecate all over it. Seeing the amazing laser videos, I bought and used a 180mW green laser and when aimed in their general direction, they barely acknowledged it was there. I've tried the rope fence solution as well, and although it worked briefly, they started sneaking under the rope. I'm now considering making a homemade motion sensor/water cannon but geese get used to these solutions so I wonder how long it will take before they get used to that as well. It's probably true that the most effective solution to chasing geese away is one that combines multiple, varying approaches. Unfortunately I don't live on the property full time and don't have the time to keep up a regimen to chase them away.

I suggested using a pellet gun, but my wife didn't like the idea. She told me to get a slingshot or better yet, a wrist rocket. It will not kill them like a pellet gun, but it certainly will teach them a lesson. (However, aim at the adults. They are the ones leading the chicks).

I know this is an old post, but I have a pond that's about an acre and I use metal rods and fishing line (they cant see it) pulled very tight. It's a pain in the A to walk all the way around and put it up, but it works! I space the rods about 6' apart and they stick up about 2' and I run two layers...one up higher to catch their necks and the other low to catch their legs. Time consuming, yes, but it has kept those rats out of my pond and yard. I have tried dogs, shooting off firearms (they just got used to hearing it), and lasers, all with no success.

I tried this and it seems to be working. I have a bank that is piled and about 45cm off the water but the Geese don't seem to like flying up onto it like the ducks, but they prefer to use a slipway which is at water level. I stretched some dark colored wire across it and it seems to disturb them. Only one goose has gotten past it so far and the rest of them couldn't work out how to and just swam off which made the clever get back in the water to re-join them. I think the trick is to get the height just right so that a) they can't limbo-dance under it, and b) can't flap their way over it in the short distance available. So far it is working and they have swum off to an easier location. If they do work out how to get past one wire, I'll just add a second. Geese seem to like to walk onto land and aren't as agile as ducks. They also like to have an escape route and if you make it difficult, they don't like it.

Tried it on our 7acre lake with beach where the Canada Geese are the problem. They chewed through the string with their serrated mandible cartilage of their bills. Next I used vinyl coated wire. They tried to gnaw through that but couldn’t. Worked for 2 yrs. 3rd year they started either ducking under it, or bunny hopping over it. 4th yr they could care less about it. They won.

Does it need to be visible string (white mason string) or can you use clear fishing line instead??? Fishing line would not be as visible along the waters edge.
@capercamper

I have found this works best with a visible string. If you maintain the integrity of the string setup you will have more success… as the string and the poles age , the geese will look for a weakness.

I tried this and they crawled right under it. I suggested using a pellet gun, but my wife didn't like the idea, plus I didn't want to deal with the carcass or the authorities. She told me to get a slingshot or better yet, a wrist rocket. It will not kill them like a pellet gun, but it certainly will teach them a lesson. (However, aim at the adults. They are the ones leading the chicks). Another solution is my sprinkler system... They like to sit in zone 5 under the tree so I am going to try setting the sprinkler for one minute at 20 min intervals. I will let you know if it works.

Geese do land on land! I have watched them do it thousands of times. Geese will hop right over this "Trick." I have also watched them do that many times. I suspect something else changed in the environment to make the site less attractive, like a dog on the property.

haven't tried the string but my neighbor knows someone from wildlife and geese always return to their birth place to mate and lay their eggs so, if you rotate the eggs in your hand they will not hatch but is illegal from the average person to do this so you can just do like I do and let your dog take care of the eggs so you don't get more and more coming every year

We live right on a Lake yes, we have tried this along with many neighbors and we watch the geese walk right up to the string and then flutter over it into the yard. our neighbor has also tried the plastic figures and they do not work either, we have a large dog that will chase them out of the yard when we let her outside but they sit and watch for her to go back in and here they come right back .

In our area , the water is a fairly large body of water that serves as a landing area for the geese ... they will always land on water rather than land if the body of water is large enough. The trick is to have the string exactly where the water meets the shoreline. They approach land by swimming with the intention of coming onto the land but can't get over the string from their swimming position in the water. If you give them enough room to swim to shore, successfully land , and walk up to the string they will jump over as you mentioned. cc

@capercamper

... from the perspective of this video (can't comment on your Great Lakes scenario , I've never been there) , it's not incorrect. The body of water in front of this property is much larger and easier for them to transition . When they make their attempt to access the land it is always from the water. I realize geese will land on the land but not in this circumstance.
