The "return line" back to the pump running under the engine seems to work pretty well (AMC did this the last few years). But then it doesn't get all that hot here so I dunno.

@@AMCguy in 1987, some 258s came with a tee on the fuel pump inlet, which ran to a steel line under the engine, tight up against the oil pan flange, and to a second port on the fuel filter outlet. (The fuel filter has one inlet and two outlet nipples). This was to help with vapour lock, and does seem to work. At least here near Kenosha with our kind of climate. I have two "88"s (made in 87) and one had it, one didn't. It makes a big difference. On some they used the same filter but didn't run the second outlet back to the pump. On those it goes back to the tank. This might actually work better. But if you're running anything other than the stock carburetter, fuel pressure suffers. For that I use an inline electric pump back by the tank. It helps with vapour lock, and, makes for much quicker starting when the car has been sitting with fuel evaporating from the fuel bowl. (And in the case of one of my Eagles, it means not having to replace the weak mechanical pump 🙂)

Got a 1968 Corvette with the 327 thats having a fuel supply issue. Got a clear fuel filter on it so we could monitor the fuel supply into the carb. After about a 5 or 8 minute stop and go driving we check the fuel filter and the fuel is barely dribbling into the fuel filter its spurts just enough fuel to keep the car running and thats it. My guess is the fuel line that runs in front of the engine is boiling fuel and possibly the fuel pump itself is vapor locking when it gets hot. Love to hear your input.

sounds like its a possibility, use a thermometer gun and check temperature in that location after some long driving. could also be a bad fuel pump. do you watch it after first start up? watch it and see if supply dwindles as the engine warms up.

as mentioned by another person here, you can do a modification like a return line to that filter from the carb to send any excess fuel back.

@@AMCguy We actually just replaced the fuel pump because it was exhibiting the same issue. That however was not it, as the new pump thats on there does the exact same thing. Engine warms up fuel in the filter gets less and less until its bare minimum as stated before.
