Nice! I never thought of running a return line to the filler neck. Wish I had seen this before I tore into mine.

Update: this summer is the hottest recorded summer in texas due to the heatwave. It’s been 102+ degrees all week. After doing these things(knocks on wood) I haven’t once had vapor lock issues. Not once! & I drive my old school every single day :) I even drove for 4 hours with the car on to an out of town car show.. last summer and didn’t have any issues.. worked wonders for me. Every now and then I stick my finger finger in there to feel the temp of the gas, it can be warm but not boiling hot. I might (just because I’m bored) wrap more heat shield over the fuel lines under car close to engine

Amazing idea with the return line on the filler neck. I live in manila where the heat goes up to 100 F (127 F) was the highest in 2022. I'll be installing heat sleeves and a vapor separator on my fuel lines for my 1977 Corolla SR so I don't get stranded again especially during midday. Thanks a lot for this idea.

Good job. Secure rubber hose so no vibration wear over time. And, u really saved yr carb with a better filter. Those glass ones are usually before the pump. Keep her going! :-)

This is genius! I live in Texas and starting to drive my 67 Mustang and been noticing some vapor lock and it's barely 85 degrees! I'll see if I can do something similar for mine. The filler neck is removable so I'd rather dril into that then gas tank /sending unit.

it works thank you i got lucky my 65 el camino had a return line on my gas neck i think that it is a over flow line so i put the return line to that & all is good.

This is what I was looking for. I’ve got a 75 electra with factory return and vent lines on the pump but they do nothing out here in El Paso. I could run it into a T fitting right before my sending units return line.

Good vid. If you do end up ever needing to drop your fuel tank, you can buy a cheap transfer hose and put the gas into another car.

Excellent video. I don't think you mentioned that the return nipple should be positioned so it's above the nipple to the carb. I have the same problem over here in England with my 1967 Vauxhall. Only a four cylinder pushrod lump and it's fine on the open road but after about a quarter of an hour in traffic with the temperature above 70 and it will start playing up. I'm going to try this method and I'll let you know how it goes.

Thats an ingenious modification, how well did that work out for you?! I have old Ford truck , I'm going to add phenolic spacer and heat shield to fuel lines and see what impact that has. I've entertained the thought of adding an electric fuel pump or do what you have done.....buuut, maybe the spacer will good enough. Nice video!

It’s been working wonderful for me. I went to a car show the other week had my car running for about 4-5 hours straight it’s safe to say it’s been working perfectly. The heat shield did actually work. But I knew it was gonna get harder and I knew I’d have a better peace of mind if I did this. I thought about an electric fuel pump too. But I still have mechanical. It’s more simple and it hasn’t given me any problems after this mod

Hey I’m for sure going to go with this, I have an 87’ bronco that hates hot weather even after changing all my cooling system, the Mississippi weather kills it. Where did you find the fitting that you attached the hose to the tank filler with and what size is the hose? I was worried my mechanical pump wouldn’t be good enough but after seeing this, I guess it’s worth a shot.

1/4th hose. 25ft long I think I got it off eBay 1/4 nipple fitting you can buy it at hardware section in any autozone or auto parts store. Been 2 years since I made this video. Not a single problem. Same mechanical fuel pump. And I drive it damn near every day

Crazy man, same boat. Been a year and a half trying to solve this for my 67 cougar and I’m going crazy. Every time there’s traffic it dies on me due to the gas sitting in the hot gas pump and vaporizing the gas. Gonna buy the filter and do the same as you, let me know if you have any suggestions and if it’s been doin you right for the past 2 years.
@vincentbryan1962

I suggest you get it done asap and never have to worry about it again. I would invest in some solid good quality fuel hose. I got the cheap flimsy one. Ever since this video I never had a single vapor lock issue. I live in Texas hottest summer 30 consecutive days of over 100 degrees. Not a problem. I like to fill up my tank with the car on. So if you do too I suggest you drill a hole a little deeper in the filler neck than I did! Good luck

That's a lot of flow through the return line. I'd be concerned about a drop in fuel pressure to the carb. If I saw that much return I would put a restrictor in the return line.

That’s an interesting point. But it hasn’t given me any troubles since I did this. Not a single problem. And had never stalled or shut off. Drove it for two summers. Also unlike most people with classics, I drive mine every single day. Hottest part of texas 100 plus weather 7 days a week. I’m not concerned at all. I’m confident and have built myself security while driving. Before I put a return line it used to shut off during the hott parts of the day, would just shut off even while driving or when I’m stopped like at a drive thru line… again it would be a concern to me if I had problems again. But she’s been running like a champ- day in and day out. I drive the shit out of mine
