If want to slant it, use 2x10x10 on one side 2x6x10 in middle 2x4x10 on opposite side if you want a slope roof. Awesome video btw

I literally just picked up a 10x10 kennel today to do exactly this. Had no idea how I was gonna put a roof on it so I started watching some youtube. Seriously the easiest way I've seen yet. And I have no experience building so this makes sense and is easy enough I can do it. Thanks so much for this video!
@rubyhomestead9109

Yeah not a problem. A 10x10 kennel will last for a very long time. Just put it how you want the water 💧 to slop on the piece of ground and there shouldn't be a problem. Every now and again you will have to move it or it will sink into the ground. So just go to a corner of it and push up and over then walk to the other side and do the same. Thanks again glad ☺ I could help..

What do you use for digging predators? I used 4' of hardware cloth folded into an "L" shape and attached one side to outside bottom of the pen and pinned the other side to the ground, so 2' up and 2' out. That takes care of thing reaching in and digging. In the warm weather they like to sleep outside the coop sometime, so I never put anything up against the sides of the pen that the hens can sit on so I don't have to worry about something grabbing them while they sleep.
@rubyhomestead9109
Жыл бұрын
So, here at our homestead Frankie will often move the pen a bit to get away from any whole that have been dug however (I full well understand not everyone can do that) You are completely right with the 4 ft wire into and L! (At least that`s what we would do if it became a problem for us. We don`t use very many "coops" so ours are always outside on a roost, the roost goes diagonally across the pen so there are only 2 places something could reach in a grab one (on the ends) for these two areas we tie a big square of wire where the roost is so nothing can climb up and reach through. At least not easily. Winter is coming up and we will put out a video of our nest boxes and predator protection soon!! Thank you so much for watching!!

How high does the wire have to go.. I just used the same wire it covers like 2ft up 2 an half feet up? Can they still get above that raccoons etc.
@rubyhomestead9109
Жыл бұрын
That should be good I would put a patch where the roost is. Coons especially can climb the kennels, they end up scaring the chickens to the ground and that`s often how they reach through and get them that`s why the two feet protection from the ground up works so well. Thanks for watching!

I have thought of using a kennel now I know it can be done.How do you winterize the sides? Do you have nest boxes inside?
@rubyhomestead9109
3 жыл бұрын
yes there are 2 ways we winterize, one, you can put tin on the sides and the other is a tarp or heavy duty plastic zip tied (we do have a video on winterizing and you could wrap the whole thing if you wanted to we just block where the wind comes from... and the nest boxes we have several ways as well we will do a video on those soon, one and our most used is we built a shelf in the corner of where its winterized and set a milk crate or whatever nesting box you prefer on said shelf, another is we have a small double nesting box hutch style that can be moved as we move the kennel to new grass... there are several more that we use as well, Be looking for a video on our nest boxes for kennels we will go into further detail and our preferences, thanks so much for watching!! Thank you for doing this! We got some fence panels for free. I don’t even think they are from a kennel. This helps with figuring out the roof. Now I just need to figure out the 4th panel. I don’t have a panel with the gate integrated. I have 4 full panels, with no allowance for a gate on the 4th panel

Yes they do they are called self-tapping metal screws. Screw it through the wood into the metal, it can be kind of tricky to get it lined up but once you get it definitely holds. An extra hand is very helpful lol. You will be able to feel when it catches!!

We tend to keep these moved even if its a foot or so at the time so we don't have an issue with diggers, but if we did I`m almost sure chicken wire would be involved... probably flaps tacked into the ground running out from the cage at least 6-8 in. to deter digging (and a good question since most people will not be moving these pens.)
