@@TheKneadyHomesteader Thank you again ! And especially for the kind words ! You and Matt are out there just doing an awesome job, and it will really pay off in your chickens ! And man oh man did Matt do great on camera ! He was clear and concise... I think some of that "homeschool teacher" is rubbing off on him... He did a great job for you (and your young feathered ladies) ! I was the same way building ours... I never wanted the day to come when Tina came back to the house in tears because something had happened to her chickens... I could not abide that... And in 10 years of those coops standing, she has never lost one to a predator... I am sure that Matt had the same thing running through his mind !

I hear you lady! We had a run built and we just reinforce the ceiling on it today. We had chicken wire rolled across the top and it was fine and in fine shape. I had ducks in there for 3 1/2 years and not one predator could get in. But I do know the chicken wire will wear out. So we put fencing up there today. Like y’all we are reinforced for an apocalypse!!!!

In Australia, we use snake mesh to cover the sides and top of bird cages. Its a square mesh about 1/3” of an inch square to keep larger snakes out. It won’t keep out hatchling snakes but hens would eat them anyway. There would be no gaps anywhere. I sort of wonder how you control them and weasels etc? We also dig down and bury wire about a foot down to stop things from digging in. Its good to see your husband Matt, even though he is gone now so tragically, its a nice reminder of his important presence and contribution to the family.
@TheKneadyHomesteader

We use very similar mesh wire although here it isn't called snake mesh. That entire run is covered with it and bolted to the coop. It is also buried and spread out underground so anything that digs will hit wire. He did an amazing job. 🥰 It's been 5 years and never had a critter get in! Praise the Lord!🙌🏼♥️

Two thumbs up on the top welded wire! We did that on our old bantam coop, but my husband used long flexible PVC pipe in an arch, if you saw those way back in the earlier days of our coops. That is the only way to do it on top, not bird netting, which is useless except to keep birds inside. I keep telling people that a lot of planning and thought in the beginning and crawling around on the ground to see what ground predators see is a great thing to do to shore up weak spots, too. People try to save money in the beginning, only to lose their flocks and have to start over. They often forget dig barriers and hardware cloth over every opening larger than 1/2". The top of the gate is a weak spot that took some thought to fill in, as well as under the gate where they can dig-we buried one of those closet shelf things, the coated wire, right in front of the gate so nothing could dig, but it did not interfere with the gate opening. So much to think about, right? I like it so far, Heather! Take care! ~Cynthia

your two thumbs up means the world to me! 😆👏🏻 we put so much time, work and love into this coop and run. I wouldn't put the babies in it until it was as safe as we could possibly make it. And you are so right, you have to get down on the ground and double check everything! Now, I have to go to the youtube time machine and see if I can find your old bantam run videos! I am dying to see your hoop roof which sounds amazing!

I really don't recall if there is a video that shows the coop, tried to find one-it was built in 2011 before I had my channel-but I can send you pictures of that run by email, if you like. The run is no longer there and the coop is a storage building, but it was really cute inside, used all sorts of "oops" paint to paint the inside, very colorful.

Love it! You might want to consider a roof over part of the run for shade and protection from hard rains or snow, flooding the run near the coop and allows them to stay outdoors in bad weather. Just a thought! We learned as we went too. We actually metal roofed the whole run the 2nd year. We also plastic most sides of the run in winter (WI here) so they can still go out of the coop. I adore you two!

From an old farm girl, weasels will love the space between panels, they can squirm thru anything, think of a mongoose how slim they are. They will borrow under or imbetween any opening. My dad used concrete blocks one layer half under with another on top for the ground. Groundhogs and squirrels looking for food will easily dig under. Just some advice even with all that dad still had to spend a few nites looking for that pesky weasel. Good luck!

Kill the snakes. Wait 24 hours or more check with a herpetologist how long after death they can still invenomate then butcher them, free chx food. If you don't spray your lawn, toss the clippings in to the birds free chx food. Winter tarp over that top cut back one some snow getting in there. Do deep bedding wood chips 8" in that coop floor keep odor down. Then just keep adding as needed, come spring you'll have compost for that lasagna garden.
