Hahaha..... excellent vid, I've been using homemade molds like this for ages, works great and pvc is cheap, reusable, comes in many diameters and can be cut to length. Here's something to try Mike: I take flexible silicone texture plates and tape them on the inside of the pvc, then fill as usual, let harden and de-mold. The texture plate peals right off, leaving behind a wonderful impression that can be left as is or filled with another color or colors. To fill it in I usually use a whipped wax, which is probably what you are frosting your candle with or at least similar. I let the candle cure for a few days then freeze it a few hours before smearing the whipped wax into the design and scraping off excess. Then, let set before giving it a final trim and clean-up and Voila beautiful decorated candle. I use a flexible silicone spatula (like for baking, in my family we call them "Magics"), to smear it in and polymer clay tissue blades are ideal for scrapping but a razor blade works too. I've even made my own texture plates from silicone and also foil tape (the real stuff, not the crafters kind). The benefit of that is you can stick it right to the mold. I usually use a light spray of mold release for the foil and for any brand new silicone plates. *I use box tape or what some call packing tape to tape the plates in place and seal the release cut. It gives a smoother transition with less clean-up in the finished candle. I used 3M but recently been using Gorilla, never had a problem with either melting. **Freezing the candle for a bit before filling helps harden the wax, both the already poured candle and the whipped filling and lessens chances for damage or distortion of the design. ***scraping off excess whipped wax is a slow and steady process to help avoid "popping out" pieces of the details or gouging the candle. Best way to start though is to not over fill, scrape off as much as you can as you apply it. Hope this helps you and anyone else interested in this art form 💗💗💗

Thanks for the demo! For melting wax, I use a metal coffee can set into an old sauce pan with a couple of inches of water. The wax chunks go into the coffee can, the burner set on low heats the water, and the wax melts in the coffee can. You can bend the edge of the coffee can a bit to create a "pour spout" for the wax.

wow! I have 26 lbs of paraffin, the result of friends buying into the "dip you hands in paraffin" craze... I was shopping 2" pillar molds , once I start melting I would like to do many at a time and that would be $$$yikes... using the "wax warmer" to melt the wax, will be interesting to see if it is hot enough.... using pvc, I could make several molds at a low price (hey.. I was thinking of using toilet paper cores lined with foil, hot glued tog, imagine, the time wasted though, some potential for texture) I was wondering, if you got the mold cool or cold before pouring.. it would make a different surface but, less danger of leaking but, not needed, your method worked great! In early days, I used to get the wax just hot enough to pour and adhere to the wick... brilliant! I need some advice on mixing stearin and... good to go! Thank you and, great video! Capt Mike is the kind of people I wish I knew locally... there is more to life than the mall and cable tv...

New sub. Colorful language Lol. I'm new to candle making. I like the clothes pin tip. And i didn't know that meant tunneling. And i want to learn how to make molds. Where can i get that comb???
@CaptMike
4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the comment. Tunneling occurs two ways. First when you make a candle using pillar wax and second when you burn a candle that has not been wicked properly. When making a pillar candle the type of wax you use will shrink somewhat when cooling causing it to "tunnel" down the middle. You will need to fix that by adding more wax until the desired level is reached. The second type of "tunneling" is caused by using a wick which does not produce the required heat necessary to create a full melt pool. I am not sure what you mean by "comb". Please explain and I will try to answer. Hope this helps some.

@@mitulprajapati3236 I would guess the silicon is getting warmer around the middle and the wax expands out from there. Just for grins and giggles make a test candle in a plastic solo cup and see it the wax holds it shape.

@@samanthanicholson9015 you will have to use a clay used for throwing pots and such. It is called ceramic clay. It is water based. I liked it... entertaining and much better than loud music that over ride5 the instructions on too many videos or the 5 minutes another site spent just cutting a milk carton to make a mold.. he showed us what we needed to know and, filled the time with delightful banter... maybe it's a cultural thing. The instructions moved along at a good pace, I was just amazed at the idea of just jumping into it without a trial run... if I thought it might leak, I would have pour an inch or two to find out...

You can put hot glue on the seam maybe instead of tape.
@CaptMike
6 ай бұрын
I'm sure that would work. It may be a little more difficult to remove the glue if you need to seperate the mold to get the candle out, but sounds likesomething that might work.
