Before this video I’d only heard “just do what feels right” and as a new artist, what you said is very helpful! I never thought of writing down descriptors to try to figure out the style I want. I’ve learned so much about art by watching your channel and in a few days I’m going to tackle gouache!

It's awesome to hear that Gavin inspired you; he and I actually used to work together! His art is amazing. I once asked him how he got so good at art and he told me he treated it like his job. He'd come home from our office job and eat, then do paintings until 9 or 10 at night, every night. The office job we had paid the bills, but his art was what made him feel alive, and that's what he gave himself to. He's an inspiring guy. And this is an excellent painting!

I've had this one on my list for a while but just got around to watching it. Another excellent video. Just what I needed to hear in sorting out my own work. We have very different styles but you're a great teacher and professional and I'm learning very useful stuff that no one else talks about. And when I saw this piece I fell in love with it and had to have it! Ordered today😀

Danica, I would love, love, love to see you to try to produce this piece as an oil painting. The bright embers floating through the trees would be a big challenge, but so rewarding to see! I'm going to work on my 5 words. On the surface, it would seem we have little in common between our styles, but that's not actually the case. For the most part, some of the elements you talk about in your video show up in my watercolour paintings! We, for sure, have mystical / magic, and eerie in common in some pieces (can you tell I've written novels about ghosts). I think I might lean to wintry, but then, I'm from way up in the North. I hope you do another video on the Top 5 words, and breaking down some of your previous pieces using those elements. Not only is it fascinating, it's right up my writerly alley! I'd love to hear more!

I tend to agree, I make those lists quite often, and mine change with my moods, so I've got an entire journal full based on the way I'm feeling, like cycles in the seasons. I think making those lists is an important tool in creating original works.

Beautiful art, and very helpful advice. I'm definitely gonna be keeping that in mind to try get my own list. I struggle a lot with not knowing what I actually want to make, and then I lose the want to draw because I'm doing what I feel I *should* do instead of letting myself do what excites me. The list idea sounds like it would help a lot so thank you 💚

I like that you paint not using the selection method, I find this way is more organic/traditional.

This makes so much sense that I feel dumb for not doing it myself.... Thanks for the nudge. I live how this piece worked out, I'd love to see you do it traditionally.

I'm in the middle of a break from my usual weekly creative deadlines to try to help me refocus my artisticness and this is one of the things I've been working on so this is such good timing! Though I've trying to do 1-3 words, maybe a slightly longer list would be better 😅

i used to like your videos but you draw the same exact face over and over and over and over and the same body over and over and over like you even do alot of the same colors. i get you like it, and you have a niche following, but youre losing a follower because i dont think ive been excited enough by your thumbnails to actually watch a video. this one, and i think 1 other are the only things ive seen. your thumbnails of what your drawing are nearly identical. you color good, but you arent very exciting. i know you and others will likely say "well im doing what i love go away you dont have to watch my videos" but id want someone to tell me where i was wrong. if i was actually having some issues id want some help. you have 5k views on some videos and 15k on others , for the same exact looking character and picture. you need to branch out. but like i said , this is just what im seeing from your art. if youre content of course keep doing it. but ive seen you post about art block more than a handful of times now , maybe youre having so much because you draw the same exact thing every single day and eventually you get stuck. some people can draw the same thing forever and be fine, but youre obviously having alot of art block with how many videos youve made addressing it. i think you should draw more things that you hate. like, i hate cities, theyre too detailed, but i love comics and they need city backgrounds so i gotta learn. have a blessed day and never stop creating
