I made two batches of hop water with Amarillo hops. One had hops added as a steep/whirlpool addition and one had hops added directly to the keg. I discuss the process for making hop water and evaluate the two versions.
Steps:
Treated 6 gallons of tap water that will be used for both batches with
• half a Campden tablet to remove chlorine and chloramine
• 5g of Citric Acid to lower the pH
Steeped Batch (2.5 gallon / 10 L):
• steep 1 oz of Amarillo hops in a hop bag in 1 gallon 180F water for 20 minutes
• remove the bag and add the hoppy water to the keg
• top up with treated water
• chill, carbonate, serve, and enjoy
Keg Hopped Batch (2.5 gallon / 10 L):
• add 2 oz of Amarillo hops to the keg in a suspended hop bag
• top up with treated water
• chill, carbonate, serve, and enjoy
Note: I would recommend a combined approach that used both steeped hops and keg hops. For a full 5 gallon batch, I estimate 1 oz of steeped hops and 2 oz of keg hops along with 4 to 5g of Citric Acid. Lemon and/or Lime can also be used to lower the pH and provide flavors.
