Although this is not as accurate as a 3D CTSCAN, it will give you a ballpark idea of how big your upper jaw is, and since the roof of the mouth is the base of the nose, also bring some awareness to the size of your nasal cavity. At 40 years old, I realized I had the jaw/nose of a 4 year old. After battling with sleep and breathing issues my entire life, I wish I would have had some understanding of how this was possibly contributing to all my health issues.
Background:
The Bogue Index (BI) is predicated on an algorithm based upon Dr. Bogue's analysis of thousands of under 6 year old kids from the late 19th-Century thru the early 20th-Century; he surmised that if a child had not achieved an inter-molar width (measured at the mesial-lingual cusps' gingival margins) of at least 28 mm by age 4 or 5, they were already 'transverse growth deficient' (i.e., lack of adequate tongue space)and thus at risk for naso-respiratory compromise and thus should be considered for 'expansion of the deciduous arch' as this condition can not self-correct, will usually become more severe, and either already is, or will very likely become, a comorbid condition with sleep and breathing problems.
The BI is just a screening tool, NOT a diagnostic! The BI points to the degree of maxillary transverse deficiency only and does not provide for a diagnosis of anything such as OSA or even malocclusion.
BI= 24mm + 1mm(per year of age)
Having spoken with one of the best airway centric pediatric orthodontists a few months back, he told me that according to McNamara, 40 mm measured at the ML cusps at the gingival margins, is usually sufficient for optimal function and esthetics. This is not to say you can't be healthy with a smaller measurement, remember there are so many factors that influence the body and health!
I was 28mm at 40 years old, aka the jaw/nose of a 4 year old. NOT GOOD haha!
