Here you go buddy. 1. choose where to start wisely 2. draw the main nodes first 3. keep things tight. don't be afraid to erase and move topics around. 4. annotations are your best friend 5. take a picture of your mindmap

Great vid! Loved the examples you refered back to + showed us your notebook - Thank you. One thing about the taking a picture or screenshot of work is if it got wet, stolen, lost or damaged in another way. Also, ink + pencil does deffo fade over time + you never know what the future holds - Lost or damaged in a move or transporting. I have a whole bookshelf of diaries...It's on my to do list to make copies, re wrote, take pics + organize them. They are one of my most prozed possessions. They are a record of my life.

At least with Rocketbook, you can put it in the freezer to get it back. Not sure about regular paper.

Roger that it does return if you put it in the freezer for an hour. I also recommend taking a picture of important maps. For me, the benefit of turning any notebook into a portable whiteboard is worth the risk. That and the process of mapping has been juiced my creativity and productivity. Just be mindful of heat exposure and you’ll be fine.

I have a passport TN, so I will not be using that. I have other planners with blank pages that I can use. However, when the 2024 release comes out I hope to get a limited edition camel/coffee or blue standard TN if there is a train involved. No train or black no buy. Well maybe I would consider the black but not be super happy with it.

Ok-- so this was a nice video and shows things I do all the time. No issues with Frixion pens, blue & red schemes, etc. But I think you need to use "Ghost Connectors" or "Off-page Connectors" to allow you to make as big a map as you want. In your main map you get to, say, a grandchild node that doesn't have enough room. So below if you make a note like [A] and then on another page you start with an [A] and continue from there . Since these nodes are self-contained you can show their details on separate pages. Later, if you need to, you can make connections between a point on this other page to the main page and you can use a separate color or dashed lines or cross lines (eg. ++++++ instead of ------- ) to show that this is a connection across nodes that's deeper than the child relationship.

George, I'm glad you're already mapping in your notebooks. This is such a cool concept of continuing the map across pages. I'd love to see it in action some time if you're willing to share over a DM. This is actually also why I'm building Mind Map Nation, a community for mind mappers to share their experiences and techniques. Thank you so much for commenting with your tips!

Just happened to see this.. thanks for sharing! I often mindmap when I'm overwhelmed. I realized watching your video - it's usually a combination of many categories. Perhaps keeping an actual small journal or at least creating a regular habit would prevent some stress. My largest was on a roll of kraft paper & smallest an index card.

Another great video Sheng, I enjoyed the insights on your mindmapping and tools. Not allowed to have electronics in the workcenter, I struggle to maintain continuity from day to day. You can use the Frixion pens with erasable notebooks like Rocketbook. Those can be scanned - even with good OCR. I use a short flip one and an A4 bigger one. With a wet wipe you can erase the whole page or just some paragraphs of it.

I generally review my previous notebook once every 3 months to see what I was thinking and feeling at that point as part of my reflection practice (remember, reflection is learning). For finding and accessing, I usually have Notion or Logseq for that. The mind maps are more for short term capture and solidification of new knowledge. The act of mapping itself is how we learn effectively.

Here are two links: FriXion erasable pen set (0.7mm fine): amzn.to/3wknRhR. FriXion erasable pen set (0.5mm xfine): amzn.to/3C6MKmW. My recommendation is to go with the 0.7mm set because it's cheaper and then you can see if you want to get any 0.5mm refills (yes they're replaceable!) if you want to go finer. Happy mapping!

Ah yes definitely something to watch out for. Because I create maps every day and use them as sort of a short term memory hack, there’s a sense of nonattachment I have towards my maps. I’ve found the process of mapping is actually the most important as it facilitates second order thinking and epiphanies (I talk about this in my latest video). That and I always take photos of them as backup.

Yes that is one of the downsides BUT you'll get it back by putting it into the freezer for 2 hours: tinyurl.com/2p8j2zt4. This is also why I recommend in the last tip to take a photo for important maps you want to keep. For me, this is a minor risk for turning my notebook into a portable whiteboard! Finally, once you mind map as often as I do, it's the process of mapping that becomes more important as helps organize our thoughts and trains our ability to think more structurally. Happy mapping!
