In part 21 of how to mix and master a song inside your home studio I go over a typical way of mixing background vocals to sit just right with the lead vocals.
One thing to think about when mixing background vocals is you need to be cautious about treating the EQ the same as you would the lead vocal.
You can apply similar EQ moves to the background vocals, but you need to carve out some space for the lead vocals to shine. That way you don't muddy up the tracks and cause any frequency masking.
I like to dip out some of the upper mids of the background vocals so that the lead vocals can occupy that space.
Adding a little harmonic distortion can help add some character to the backing vocals without having to boost the high end.
I like to add a compressor, but have the attack set faster than the lead vocal settings so that I catch the transients of the BGVS. I don't wan't any part of the backing vocals accidentally poking out when I don't want them to and taking the focus off the lead vocal.
This is not the only way to treat Bgvs, but it's my typical approach.
Have fun when you're mixing harmony vocals inside your track!
