Thanks for this - we had a slightly confusing situation recently when moving our machine from what was effectively placement in the top left corner of one room to the top right corner of another. To make matters worse the machine was originally wired from the perspective of viewing the machine as you do with the gantry running across the x-axis. In its new position it was impossible to stand and view the axes X left to right and Y front to back so we had to swap the wiring of the axes over. This seemed OK but (as you mentioned) the work then came out mirrored so, as a temporary measure I have inverted the X- direction pin. Next week we will again pull the machine out from the wall and adjust the wiring to give the 'operator' exactly the right perspective when running jobs without the pin inversion. Prior to this, for over 12 months, we have been living with the need to rotate the design (usually text engraving) 90 degrees anticlockwise to compensate for the original wiring.

Getting closer to my Masso purchase, I still have a few brackets to build then tear-down / paint. Another consideration for orientation when options exist is to match your drafting computer screen"S" with the table to prevent having to rotate big files constantly. I have 2 monitors next to each other (L-R) so I did the 12' run as X and the 6' as Y..

i would refer to the X axis as a xylophone, being played from left to right and a yo yo as the "Y" axis as it goes up and down - works for me! thanks peter for another great video

The advent of home-built cnc has confused this issue somewhat since I've been involved in machining. In one's home shop you can name your axes however you like. Manufacturers of machine tools and users of cad/cam systems serving multiple machines have to observe standard guidelines to avoid confusion. As I was taught, the Z axis is always in line with the spindle bore and the X axis is usually the longest or lowest axis of travel. Simple. Nothing to do with the operator's position. Again, in one's home shop you can name them whatever you like, just be prepared for possible confusion when asking for help from manufacturers of cad/cam support people.

Thanks Keith I have to disagree with that method of axis naming. For example, my first machine had both the X & Y axis the same lenght and there was no moving gantry crossing the table as there is on my current setup. Basically the cutting area moved and the Z axis was stationary above it. People expect that what they see on the screen is the same as what they see on the table and there is only one way of doing that. By matching what you see on the screen with what you see on the table and that only works if you stand in the right place. I agree that it is the advent of the DIY machine that has caused the confusion and that people can and do name their axis whatever they like without problem. As you noted the problems really begin when you try and interact with others or allow someone else to use the machine. I just don't see lenght, height, girth or color being a good bais for naming any machine axis but I am also happy to be proved wrong. Cheers Peter

CNCnutz (Peter Passuello) On your first machine, the Z axis would be the vertical table movement (if that's how you accomplished movement in line with the spindle). Given that both X and Y were the same dimension, X would default to the furthest away from the spindle. On a horizontal mill, the Z moves horizontally, the Y vertically and the X left and right when viewed from behind the spindle (as in a car). Generally, all movements towards the workpiece in Z, to the left for X and towards the operator are negative; easily remembered because they are thought of as 'bad'. If you google 'right hand rule' you can help yourself get REALLy confused (: I trade school, some guys had a long hard week wrapping their heads around the concept.

Actually on my build both X & Y were the same distance fron the Z Axis as the Z was in the centre of the table. The Right hand rule I learnt when I did my training many years ago were to do with motion, magnetic fields and current flow. The horizontal mill sounds really interesting. Cheers Peter

5:57 - Wait... I just spent all this time adding TWO more axis to my machine... what about A, B, and C Axis??? (Evil Grin) A - Rotation around the X-Axis B - Rotation around the Y-Axis C - Rotation around the C-Axis I added the capability to do X-Y-Z-A-C to the mill now. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zIqeqXeLpXZ1nag

I have enough trouble with 3 dimensions. I can manage the 4th dimension of time but when I add the 5th dimension instability in the space time continumn occurs and Windows closes down. Your Linux set up seems to work better. Nice setup Jerry. I look forward to seeing you machine with it. Cheers Peter

@@cncnutz That's the real kicker... I need to learn Fusion360 now... and I seem to be reluctant for some reason. Also... I never thought about this... but then I rotate down 90 degrees... the tip of my part drops 6 inches. For such a big machine... it only has about 7 inches of Z-Axis... so it is easy to run out of travel on that axis. It definitely ups the complexity an order of magnitude.
