The fact that you are even thinking about it already as a freshman makes me think you’re going to be super successful in preparing to pay for college without student loans. Unfortunately your father’s story is all too common. Trying to help students avoid what he’s going through is a huge part of why I started this channel in the first place. I highly recommend you get a copy of Anthony O’Neal’s book Debt Free Degree. I actually have the audio book and a physical copy to write notes in. He has a whole set of chapters that break down things you should be doing during different years of high school. He actually starts with middle school, but let’s be honest, most middle school students (rightly so) aren’t thinking about or preparing for college. Anyways, it’s linked in the video description or you can just Google it. I’m excited for your journey. Let me know if you have any specific questions around paying for college. I’m happy to help where I can.

@@ThomasTries To be completely honest hearing my fathers story about his debt was not the only reason why I started looking I started looking because my family is pretty low income and I don’t live in the states but plan to study in the states the income from where I am is average to pay for college but not average at all in the states but thanks I hope to be successful in the paying of college I was looking to read the book i have no idea there was a audio version will definitely lookinto it I was wondering are there any scholarships for people out of state that are not ethnicity/ race ones i’m Puertorican and i have found it hard to look for scholarships for that include Puerto Rico as a place for eligibility and not only I have found it hard because of where I am but my age has been pretty hard almost all I find are for junior or seniors in highschool makes me think I started looking too soon but I started looking for scholarships since the 7 grade but only started applying now

Freshman year is definitely not too early to start looking for and applying for scholarships. Here is a video I did for scholarships due in May: kzitem.info/news/bejne/zm2AlmaDcZqAoGU Scholarships don’t have to say exclusively for Puerto Rico residents for you to be eligible. There are many scholarships for international students and also many that don’t have much criteria at all, so you would definitely qualify. Keep searching!

Institutional scholarships are ones given to you by your institution/University versus private scholarships, which are from banks or other organizations.

What is the best way you have found to pay for college without student loans?
@aaaicila_
3 жыл бұрын
I waitressed my way through my first 2 years of community college and paid all cash for my classes so I wouldn't have to take any student loans. It was not the same when I transferred to a 4 year, but I wasn't too worried about taking loans at that time because I was already halfway through with college.

That is awesome you were able to pay cash for college while at community college. I feel like there are so many people who don’t even consider working to pay for college as an option. Thanks for sharing your experience!

My daughter was denied Federal student aid. The school gave her a merit and she was awarded DC tag. However this was not enough. Now I am having difficulty paying large sums required. Now what????. Help. Mom

I’m so sorry you’re in this stressful situation. It sounds like if your daughter and you are committed to the school she is considering, then loans may be required. However, she can still apply for private student loans to help pay for college. My channel is full of scholarships to apply for all year long. If she wins private scholarships, that can help supplement the difference also.

After you file for FAFSA, do the schools send you the financial aid package after or before you are accepted/apply? Is this financial aid package accurate or does it change?
@ThomasTries
3 жыл бұрын
Great question. When you file the FAFSA, you will list schools on the application itself. The government will send your information along with what you qualify for to your school. Your school will then send you a financial aid package including what the federal government has to offer you as well as any scholarships or grants the school has to offer you. In my experience, the financial aid letter usually follows an acceptance letter. Which makes sense because there is no point in sending you a financial aid package letter if they aren’t going to accept you to the school. So except to receive the financial aid letter after you have received an acceptance letter. The financial aid package you get is accurate as far as being what you are actually offered. You can always appeal you financial aid package at your school for more financial aid, grants or scholarships. So the amount of aid could go up, but the amount you’re offered won’t go down. Does that all make sense?

Some of those scholarships are able to be applied to trade schools which is pretty cool. And almost all are also available to high school seniors enrolled in college for this coming year. You just have to check the qualifications for each scholarship, but these videos break all of that down to make it easy to find what you need to know. Good luck!

what about if you can't fill up your FAFSA..? you won't be able to ask for anything? neither scholarships or work-study?
@ThomasTries
3 жыл бұрын
Good question. The FAFSA is what the government uses to determine what kinds of financial assistance you qualify for from the federal government. This includes federal grants and work study. The colleges you choose will use this information when determining what scholarships and grants you qualify for from their school. So without filing the FAFSA, you won’t be eligible for a lot of financial assistance available. There are still private scholarships you can apply for and you can always apply to work part time at your school or off campus, but it would be outside the work-study program. And even without the FAFSA you can ask your college for whatever you want, but they are less likely to be able to give you anything without the FAFSA.
