Hey jen...trying to work on this project, but I'm having an issue. I follow every step of your tutorial, and when I peel back the stencil, no matter how slowly, all the pain lifts with the stencil. It doesn't stick to the wood hardly at all. Does it have to be done on bare wood? The wood I'm using is painted/aged from the manufacturer. I'm using the same modge podge as you, but I'm using Martha Stewart all surface craft paint, acrylic. I painted the back of the sign with just paint and it sticks on its own, but when I use it with a stencil, it all seems to want to stick together. :(

Hi Jennifer! I have a large vinyl stencil, wooden sign that was gifted to me last Christmas. The sign is similar to your Welcome sign on the video above. The sign is placed outside my front door and unfortunately the letters are starting to peel off - I love the sign and don’t want to throw it away, can you recommend what type of glue I can use to seal it back in place? Any recommendations or instructions would be greatly appreciated!
@JenniferMaker

It sounds like you have a lovely sign that you want to preserve. Based on the context provided, I recommend using a hot glue gun with glue sticks to seal the letters back in place. Make sure to use finger protectors to prevent accidental burns. Additionally, you might want to clean the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove any dust or dirt before reapplying the letters. This will help ensure a better bond.

Tried using the Cricut Stencil Vinyl / Transfer Tape and it was SO frustrating! Each time I applied the transfer tape to my stencil, it didn't lay flat and had lots of wrinkles and bubbles. No matter how I scraped, I could NOT get it to lay flat over the stencil. I even covered the stencil AND transfer tape with a weighted board, it still wasn't totally flat and was still curling on the edges from being rolled (before applying to the wood) 😡. When I went to lift the transfer tape, it pulled on so many of the letters that I had to use my scraper tool to scrape the vinyl off the transfer sheet as I went. To make it all more frustrating, my base paint came up in places when I removed the stencil. A project that I thought would take 30 minutes tops took me two days with lots of touch ups! Where did I go wrong? 😩 I used Cricut Stencil Vinyl and Cricut Transfer Tape and also used Paper Studio Stencil and Transfer Tape for another. Both were equally frustrating. I like your tip to apply transfer tape to your clothes to make it less tacky..wish I'd seen that when I started my project..deep sigh!🤯 Any tips?

Sorry to hear that, Paige! Did you paint your wood beforehand? You need to either leave the wood bare or sand and stain it, not paint it beforehand. Then, as long as you use permanent vinyl, and make sure you are removing the parts you want to PAINT when you are weeding, your stencil should be adhering just fine. @nataliecollins5947
3 жыл бұрын
It seems like soooo much is missing from the point you take it out of the cricut and transferring it on the wood. If I put transfer tape on the back, then you have to put the stencil down mirrored.... if you put transfer tape on the front, you remove positive space from the back but it looks like you're removing it from the front and put the transfer paper over the front afterwards? but if I don't put transfer tape on the back, the entire thing is falling apart and I cannot put small negative space pieces back into place. This is the most frustrating project I've ever taken on and I thought your video explained it well until I had to re-watch is 30 times and still do not understand because you're not explaining what you've done to prep it for the wood board. Please help!!! What is the backing on yours that keeps the small negative space pieces still in place? Is it not transfer paper?? So confusing.
@JenniferMaker
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Natalie! You can use Mod Podge on your wood ahead of time,. It really just depends on the surface of the wood you use, you may not need to. Since we've cut these stencils out of permanent vinyl, it sticks to the wood itself so the negative space is covered. Once you've placed your transfer sheet and vinyl down, burnish it, and then slowly peel back the transfer tape leaving your vinyl. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!😊🌻

I disagree with the theory of pouncing. I find it is better to swirl with your stencil brush in a very light coat and doing three light coats is far better. I find each time I "pounce" it causes bleeding under the stencil. Light coats and off loading any excess paint on a paper towel and painting in a swirl method or using the pounce method with a light load of paint on a makeup sponge works much better.

I want to do a stencil (with acrylic paint) on pine wood (yoga bench)… can i do it directly on bare wood (already sanded) and after the drawing is dried just used a sealer? Or should i stained the wood before and seal after? If i have to stain what stain should i used… want the wood to be natural color! Thanks ☺️

You will want to stain your wood first if you want a stain on it or just use the bare wood. Use the matte Mod Podge on the stencil so the paint doesn't bleed through and it is optional if you want to seal it or not. 💜 jennifermaker.com/vinyl-stencils-painted-wood-signs/

Loved the red wood stain!! Never thought to do a colored stain!! But I do have a question - do your stencils ever leave a residue on the wood after you peel them off? Mine always leave a residue and I try to scrape it off with my nails or brayer but it ends up just leaving a scratch in the wood. Any ideas how to get the residue off wood?

Are you leaving it on a long time or heating the stencil up? Maybe try a qtip with rubbing alcohol in a small spot and see if it removes the adhesive but leaves the stain alone.🥰

That’s a lot of extra work and drying. Buy a stencil, spray it with stencil adhesive, dry 10 minutes and dab on the color with a stencil brush. And no wasted vinyl that I’m guessing is not cheap. Wash your stencil and it will last quite a while. Lol. No I don’t have a circuit. I did all of it without a $400 machine.

You could definitely try that or cutting a plastic sheet as a stencil and using adhesive on the back. We haven't done a project like that. Thanks for watching!😊🌻

Do you have a video of making a wood sign with paint, but it has multiple colors and/or multiple layers?

Would you use acrylic paint as well for painting the sign (not just the letters but say half the sign stained and half painted) or would leftover house paint work for that? Then use acrylic for the stencil part?
@JenniferMaker
3 жыл бұрын
That would be a different technique if you are painting the sign. For painting the sign, I would use stencil vinyl and apply several thin coats of spray paint for the letters.

I’m having the hardest time with the letters I’ve painted coming off the wood when I remove the vinyl stencil. The stencil doesn’t bleed but it pulls up the letters with it. Any tips of tricks?

Did you use the Modge Podge first? The paint should not come off if it is totally dry. Maybe you needed to let it dry longer. 💕

Is there a reason why you can’t just create the saying in vinyl and apply to the wood sign? I have some wooden ornaments I wanted to try and do this with . . . And tips or video for help? Thanks Jen💚

Could you dry the mod podge or paint in-between layers with a hairdryer? Or would it make it impossible to get the vinyl off?

I haven't tried it but It may be fine on a low setting to not push the paint under the stencil.

Why permanent vinyl, I thought u use removable for stencil.
@JenniferMaker

You can still peel permanent vinyl off surfaces, in this case it just worked better, but you could use removable vinyl if you'd like. 😊

The materials I used are in the supply list. These signs I used the vinyl as a stencil and painted the sign. Here is a tutorial that I used vinyl letters on the wood. For this one I used Polycrylic protective finish (matte) (this is important for getting your vinyl to stick to the wood). jennifermaker.com/vertical-welcome-sign-porch/

Can I ask a silly question.. what is the difference between “Weld” and “Attach”. To me Hypothetically it means, “Joining Together”. Am I Wrong? Thanks. 😊
@JenniferMaker
2 жыл бұрын
Attach keeps your shapes in the same arrangement when you send the design to the mat to cut. The shapes are still separate pieces, but their layout stays in place. The Weld tool unites two or more separate shapes into one single shape to cut.

I made my first sign and it came out beautifully. Is there a way to smooth out the texture of the paint from "pouncing"? I did go over it with the cosmetic sponge but the paint still has a raised pouncing texture.

We use matte Mod Podge and let it dry and then painted and let the paint dry before lifting the stencil. Here is the blog post. jennifermaker.com/vinyl-stencils-painted-wood-signs/

I’m sure this has been addressed, but how do I get vinyl on transfer tape to stick to painted wood without pulling the paint off with the excess tape?
