For today’s easy flower piping tutorial we will be making small carnation flowers. Follow along with our easy step-by-step buttercream flower piping tutorial and learn how to make this easy mini carnations. These beginner buttercream carnation flowers are piped using a # 102 petal piping tip. I am using a pink buttercream but carnation flowers come in almost every colour imaginable so feel free to use whatever colour you would like.
For this piping tutorial I am using a medium consistency buttercream. I will also be using a bag with a coupler, if you do not have a coupler you’ll need a second bag with a medium to large round tip. We will be using a number 102 petal piping tip for the mini carnations.
To begin attach a square of parchment to a flower nail. Remove your tip and use your coupler or use your medium round tip to pipe a small mound in the centre of the flower nail. Now with our number 102 tip we will begin piping our petals at the top of the mound. To pipe your petals apply pressure pull up slightly and then dip back down. For the first row of petals I will pipe three and I’m going to angle these towards the centre so we cover up the top of the mound. For the next row of petals move your tip down slightly and change the angle of the piping tip so that it is facing straight up and down. Again, we will apply pressure pull up and dip back down but you want to wiggle your tip slightly so that you get a nice ruffled edge on your petals.
For the third row of petals we will again increase our angle to about 30° and move down on the mound. You will pipe these petals in the exact same fashion applying pressure pulling up and dipping back down while wiggling our tip. For the final row of petals move your tip to the very bottom of your mound and increase the angle to about 45°. This will give the final row a nice full look.
That’s how easy it is to pipe a mini carnation flower! If you have enjoyed this tutorial, Please consider subscribing! I do a new piping tutorial each week! If you have any questions, comments or suggestions let me know down below!

Buttercream Recipe:
Ingredients
1/2 Cup butter softened to room temperature
2 Cups powdered sugar
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
1-2 Tablespoons milk
Directions:
In a large bowl if using a hand mixer or in the bowl of your stand mixer cream butter on medium low speed for 2-3 minutes or until fluffy and pale in colour. Add 1/2 of the powdered sugar and mix for 2 minutes. Add remaining powdered sugar and mix for another 2 minutes. Your buttercream should be fluffy, pale and thick at this point. Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix well. If the buttercream is still too thick/stiff add another tablespoon of milk and continue mixing. You will want a medium consistency buttercream to pipe your flowers with! Add food colouring. For this tutorial I used wilton rose gel colour.
