Hey Randy. I really appreciate the kind words. I think when a lot of KZitemrs finally have a little success, they forget to continue to provide value or are just looking for the next big video. When I started looking at any success as a privilege rather than something I deserve, it's helped me focus better. These days I ask myself "five years from now will this video have some value if a random player comes across it" rather than "will the algorithm show this to as many random people as possible". The only foolproof way to compete is provide quality. You're the fourth person who's used the word 'motivate' this week. I take that as the highest compliment. One of the things I've really worked on in improving my teaching with my private students is my inflection and word choice. I try to provide both conscious/direct motivation and well as subconscious/indirect motivation. I'm still learning but I've found that that coupled with my absolute obsession with studying practice techniques and what effective practice really is, has made me a much better teacher. I appreciate the support SO MUCH. Please enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. -Mark

I appreciate you equally for taking the time to check out one of my videos. It's funny, I have a few 12 string tips videos (I usually do one every 6 months or so since new viewers rarely go back and watch old videos and since I have the only decent sized channel that primarily focuses on the 12 string) and I was thinking of doing a reboot for this weeks video. I like to add at least a couple of new things so if I can come up with some legitimately fresh tips, I may do it. You can always email me at markaranalli@gmail.com if you have any questions. About 60% of my core audience are guys between 50 and 75. I do get a lot of emails so it does take a couple days to get back sometimes but I return every email. Also, I dont sell anything so you dont have to worry about sales pitches or angles. Have a great day! Mark

There was a lot of valuable information including some new helpful hints and a few recaps from some of your previous videos. Purchasing a 12-string capo was one of the best pieces of advice I followed from you! I was wondering about using a slide on your 12 string. Did you need to raise the bridge to use it?
@8MinuteAxe
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff. Let me start by saying that I'm not a great slide player. With that disclaimer, I offer this. Try a glass slide. It has a mellower sound and you won't get as much of that metallic rub. It also seems to bring out the harmonics of the string sets better. If you're not an experienced slide player, definitely start with open E tuning. It's very forgiving (most open tuning are) but it will also allow you to use any knowledge you have of theory (or even general knowledge of the fretboard) without having to do math calculations to translate what notes you're playing. LOL. Although it's recommended to play slide on a guitar with higher action, I play slide on the same electrics that I use for regular playing (and I have the action set very low). If you really want to raise the action and play it like a dobro they actually have a nut extender you can get for around 10 bucks. I bought one although I haven't used it yet. Here, I found one on Sweetwater for $7 www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PerfectNut--grover-perfect-guitar-nut-height-extender?. If you get it and try it out let me know what you think. Thanks for all of the support. Have a great weekend and take care. -Mark

@@8MinuteAxe Thanks Mark. I will give a glass slide a try. I have a metal slide but it is bulky and I have never been able to master it. I have tried it on single strings muting the other 5 because I have always been hesitant about tuning my guitars to open E or G although I know that is best for slide. Now that I have enough guitars in the house maybe it is time to use one for alternate tunings.

Mark, great video. I have played 12 string for 50 years (non professional, totally for my own enjoyment) and I use it as my main guitar a lot. I recently tuned mine to standard after years tuned down a full step but I'm going back to the lower tuning today as I agree the sound is fuller tuned lower. I also find it stays in tune better tuned lower. As for capos, I've tried several and currently use a G7th Newport or a Shubb C3 as I prefer their narrower profile on the neck as I have thick fingers. Thanks for your tips and overall support of 12 strings, they are great.

James. You make a great point that I put into practice last night. I was learning Blind Willie McTell's version of Statesboro Blues and it was easier to get the alternating thumb and picking syncopations down first with the six and then go for it with the 12. And yes, small adjustments. I actually shot an entire section on fingerpicking but then realized that I didn't want the video to be a full lesson so I recut the short section about doing a separate video on finger style and cut it. My biggest problem: I haven't bought a 12 string yet. I've played them a lot, but never bought one. The problem is that buying an acoustic guitar is a multi-year process for me. Perhaps that's an interesting idea for a new video - a chronicle of buying an acoustic guitar. This video is actually pretty great. The time you spend on achieving a steady tuning alone is worth a standalone video so that people can easily access it. As a matter of fact, I think this would be a great "primer" video, and perhaps step off into an entire 12 String Arts and Sciences playlist, going into each topic in depth.
@8MinuteAxe

You know, I'm the same way. I'll buy an electric as impulse from a cookie in my phone but each acoustic I've owned has been more of a journey than a purchase. Certainly the sections on form, stringing, tuning, fingerstyle and alternate tunings need their own video. Thanks again for the amazing support. Your counsel and encouragement are very much appreciated.

Hey Shawn. Thank you for the kind words. After about 2 years of teaching (this would have been around 2001) I decided that it was just as important to learn how to be a great teacher as it was (or is) to be a great guitarist. I've spent many, many hours watching other teachers that I think are great and I've tried to continue to improve my craft. I think that one of the most important things is to have a reassuring and confident tone that exudes the same feelings in my students. I actually think I do this better in online privates than in person. I'm a bit type A and my frenetic energy is palpable in person. That being said, the enthusiasm is a benefit for my in person students. Anyway, I do appreciate you saying that. Let me know if you're struggling with anything. I'm only an email away. -Mark

3 жыл бұрын
Hey L KayBee! I don't. I will say this. I was on the road with guitars for years and none of them have barely a scratch on them (I simply always put them back in the case after a show and handled with care). That being said, I've never had a negative experience as far as a neck giving out, a headstock breaking, or any other major malfunction so I've come to believe that these things are built pretty sturdy. If I had to make an educated guess I would say a best practice would be to detune if you own a cheaper model. If my Taylor or Takamine gives away I would attribute it to a design flaw. Also, I'm going to be doing a full video on restringing. I'm not one of those who thinks the neck is affected at all by taking all of the strings off. I've always done this with my guitars....and I'm picky about action and I've never had a neck get out of whack. Most professional guitar techs will tell you the same thing. Again, if you own a cheaply made guitar, it's probably a good idea to change one at a time just in case. Thanks so much for the support and the comment. I really appreciate and value your time! Have a great weekend. -Mark

Hey Hans. FIrst of all, THANK YOU for the kind words and the support. I really appreciate it. Also, you can email me anytime. It may take a couple of days but I'm always willing to answer any questions or help out however I can. As far as the pick-up, here's the deal. I'm a huge fan of Taylor guitars. My 410 has been my #1 guitar at solo acoustic gigs for years. It's a 99 and has the old Fishman Taylor pickup system. And it sounds amazing. Somewhere around 2002 Taylor went with the ES2 system. I bought a GS mini custom a couple of years ago which actually came stock with a lower grade pickup. This one had the ES2 so I jumped on it. I wasn't impressed. The Taylor 150e 12 string also has the ES2. I decided to give the Harley Benton pick up (it's a knock off of the Woody) a try and I love it. If you live in the states you're better off just buying the Woody (there are several different quality grades, I'm not an expert so you'll have to research a little). As an add on with a guitar, I didn't incur any shipping charges for the HB pickup. If you're in the US, and just order that, it will probably price itself out. If you're in Europe, scratch what I just said. LOL. One other important thing. Part of the sound that you're hearing is coming from a pair of stereo mics on my Zoom h6n. The mics are very high quality. I hope this helps. Take care and enjoy the rest of your weekend. -Mark

I would like to learn more about arpeggiating chords.
@8MinuteAxe
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Randy. A great place to start is on something like House of the Rising Sun. Since the song actually is in fact a series of open chords arpeggiated in a certain pattern it's a way to get comfortable with the idea without having to create your own patterns. The song is in 6/8 with a 7 note repeating pattern. If you have trouble with this just cut out one of the notes and play single notes downwards (from low to high) and count (one note for each count) 1,2,3 and then upwards 4,5,6 and then switch chords and repeat. More Than a Feeling is another example of arpeggiating a chord. Check out my video 5 CLASSIC 12 STRING RIFFS AND HOW TO PLAY THEM! kzitem.info/news/bejne/joN5r4uuo4iKiKA. More Than A Feeling is one of the tunes and I explain the pattern. Or you can just try playing single notes of chord based songs you already know (or even try the Brown Eyed Girl example). Let me know if this helps. Take care and have a great evening. -Mark

Hey 999. So, the original 'directors cut' of this video was 30 minutes long. I couldn't help but gravitate to a lesson after each tip. Then I realized that the purpose of the video is to provide tips that should be further explored. I ended up completely cutting Tip 7 - Pedal tones and Tip - Travis Picking and Finger Style. I didn't think the former was important enough to mention and the latter too important to just dismiss so I shot and dropped in the promise to do a seperate video on Finger Style. I will be making that video, and pretty soon. Last night I learned Statesboro Blues by Blind Willie McTell. I think it's an excellent way to teach finger Style on the 12. As far as travis picking, Ill probably use Dust in the Wind since I've already covered it and I think it's a good crossover TP piece from a 6. I really appreciate you checking out the video and for the support. Email anytime if you have any specific questions (I have about 4 other videos in queue before the finger style video will be live). Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. -Mark

Hey David. Great question. Getting used to the string sets is the key. I recommend playing songs you know well on the 12 and feeling the difference. You'll quickly develop slight adjustments that will make it a lot easier. Eventually, the challenge will be more about hand fatigue. That takes a little more time but just like you did when you learned the 6 string, you'll get there. Mark

I use to have a lot of trouble with the high G string breaking. It was too thin to be tuned that high. So I would buy the same set again but replace that string with a 10 instead of the 9. I use a thin nylon pick still to this day. But for picking I will use a medium pick but still nylon. I always tune my 12 down a step. It is easier to sing with and a lot easier on the bridge. Question. I have been thinking of putting a pickup on the inside because I use a plug in the sound hole because it overwhelms everything. But I could still regulate the sound in places that are really live. (Natural reverb) any suggestions on how to get that done?

I use to break the high G string because it was just too thin to be played for much at all. I use ultra light strings but I am careful to replace that string if it’s too narrow. Any good ideas on putting an internal pickup on my 12 string? I have one that fits in the sound hole but I also use a sound hole plug so they aren’t compatible. Any ideas.

Hey Mark. As always, your comment contains several great points. Here's something interesting. In my first tips video, and in this one before I decided to cut the entire section, I discuss using pedal tones. And kind of to your point about Ocean, using pedal tones on the 6 provides enough harmonic interest to where it can be overkill on the 12 (hence the reason I cut it). John Butler is an incredibly talented guitarist and songwriter and seems to be a genuinely good guy. That being said, I would agree 100% that a song like Ocean is not even close to his best nor does it really highlight what makes him such a good player. He didn't intend this so I don't fault him for it but it's become almost a showy piece that impresses those that don't play guitar more than those who do. And for sure, any of the Bach pieces (even the simple ones that I can play) do give off that classical harpsichord sound on the 12. I appreciate your time, comment, and expertise. Have a great weekend. -Mark

Great tips as always Mark. Any chance you'll do a series on alternate tunings as a stand alone topic? Trying to cover Leadbelly or "Blind" Willie McTell accurately, without using their original tunings, is a war lost before the first battle. Any sheet or TAB music will invariably not have the original tunings for these two artists. I have an original Leadbelly songbook from 1961, (a prized possession) and even his original sheetmusic did not note the tunings used. Leadbelly was known to use some real oddball tunings, and Blind Willie often tuned 1 a&b and 2 a&b to four different notes, or one of each pair just slightly sharp, giving his G runs a weird, unearthly sound I've never heard in any cover. From my own experience Celtic tunings work well on the 12, DADGAD, Double Drop D, Open D, Open D Sus and some C variations offer real advantages to the 12 string player. I'm having a real love affair with Orkney tuning atm, CGDGCD, because of its utter simplicity. If anyone wants to try Orkney, Steve Boughman a well known Celtic Guitarist, offers a simple to follow 6 part series that is informative and humorous. He uses a 6, but the info converts easily. (Sorry for beating someone else's drum here Mark.) I'm sure John Butler does 'Ocean' in one of the Celtic flavor C variants.

Hey Orville. I wish I would have read this comment last night. I spent about three hours getting down Statesboro Blues note for note (David Hamburger did a transcription in standard and I also learned one in open D). Let me ask this: (and I don't necessarily have the answer) is it more important to learn some of their compositions in the style of, provide some historical context, and applaud the impact they had, or is the only way to honor them to get the songs down note for note. I would think they would be happier with the former. The songs were meant to be played live and they probably never played them the same way twice. I want to learn a Leadbelly tune. Would you mind copying a page of the songbook and sending it to me (if you you're willing to do this, send me one of his more famous songs that's not impossible to play!) As far as you mentioning someone else, I have no problem with that. I guess if you said, try this guy, he's a much better 12 string teacher....I would wonder why you're watching me. LOL. I know very little about Celtic playing. Let me tell you how little I know. We used to play a large Irish Restaurant/Bar (had a bit stage and held about 350 people). We opened for the Irish Rovers once. I thought they were a local Irish band! Years later, I was trying to find out who wrote that song about the chimpanzees and the Unicorn! Holy crap, really??! Wow, we once opened for them. Thanks for another great comment and I think you know how much I appreciate the support.
