Hello! I’m John Russell.
Part of accent reduction involves learning to link certain words in certain ways.
Let’s explore how you can improve your ability to stress words by developing the skill of self-monitoring - learning how to tell if what you are saying is clear and understandable.
Start by reading and listening to a sentence.
Like this:
This is an unusual situation.
You can mark where you hear linking, like this:
This is an unusual situation.
Next, listen again to your sentence:
This is an unusual situation.
Then record yourself saying the sentence. Compare your recording to the audio file of the native speaker.
Now, Imagine I did not do the same linking as the native speaker did. What would this sound like?
[native speaker with linking] This is an unusual situation
[pretend incorrect linking ] This is an unusual situation
Notice that in the second recording, I was not doing the same linking. I kept space between some words and linked other words. The goal is to match the linking exactly.
You might have to record and compare yourself many times while doing this exercise. But it will be very helpful for your long-term language development. Over time, you will develop your ear and be able to self-monitor - know when you are doing something correctly.
That’s all for today! Keep up the good work.
