Hello! I’m John Russell.
The idea of practicing English on native speakers might be a little scary for you. Perhaps you are worried about not being understood.
Such concerns are natural and understandable.
However, these worries might be having an unexpected side effect. That is, your fears might be reducing your ability to communicate clearly. Why?
The answer is that you need a certain level of confidence when you speak.
If you don’t have enough confidence, then you are likely to speak very quickly, speak very quietly, or speak in an unclear way.
The idea is this: you are worried about speaking. So when you talk to a native speaker, you speak quickly or too softly. The native speaker doesn’t understand exactly what you said, and so you become more nervous and speak even more quickly.
You can break this process by developing confidence. How do you develop confidence in your speaking? Here is one idea:You train like an athlete. You warm up your body and then practice in very specific ways so that you improve your skills. But unlike an athlete whose main goal is to win a competition, your main goal is to communicate clearly and effectively. Future videos will explore these ideas in greater detail.
Let’s end this video with a quiz.
What is one sign that you might not have enough confidence in your speaking?
1. Speaking too loudly.
2. Speaking too quickly.
The answer is B - Speaking too quickly.
That’s all for today! Keep up the good work!
