Hello! I’m John Russell.
It can be scary to practice speaking English. Perhaps you are talking to an English teacher or a native English speaker. You might become worried about how you say certain sounds.
This nervousness can create a problem. Nervous or worried people often speak more quickly.
Consider this example.
My name is John. I love learning about languages and teaching about languages.
I said this at a relatively slow speed. I sounded reasonably sure or confident about what I was saying.
Now consider this example. I will say the same sentence very fast.
My name is John. I love learning about languages and teaching about languages.
Even native speakers might have a hard time understanding me. This is because I spoke very quickly. I might have seemed nervous or worried to the listener.
So, what can you do to improve your speaking speed?
One idea is to imagine that you are a politician giving a speech, or an actor appearing in a play. Politicians and actors have to speak slowly and confidently.
Both politicians and actors build their skills by practicing their speaking speed.
One way to practice is to take any kind of dialogue and practice saying it very quickly and very slowly. You can then record yourself using a phone, computer or tape recorder. Compare how you sound when you speak quickly and when you speak slowly. You will likely find that the slower version is almost always better.
That’s all for today!
Keep up the good work.
