Reminds me of the Depression when people took old Model A's and turned them into doodlebugs when tractors were prohibitively expensive. I love the idea of repowering an old rig with a Hobo Freight powerplant. I saw one guy put a Predator 212 and put it in a Baja bug, but then lopped off the recoil start and put on an old-timey rope start. Poor man's antitheft!

Dad grew up during the depression. He said that one of my uncles made a tractor by putting a car transmission behind another car transmission to reduce the speed and get more torque. As for the rope start, that's not antitheft. That's just BYOR (Bring Your Own Rope) theft. 😂😂

I have a suggestion for connecting the clutch eye to the motor shaft. If you have two shafts that aren't perfectly aligned you can connect them together with a Lovejoy flex connector. I've see these used in factories a lot. Otherwise, it becomes critical to make sure the shafts ARE perfectly aligned. While working in a cannery in 2015, I followed up behind a group of guys who had set up some machines that each had a 1 inch steel shaft connecting a primary gearbox to a secondary gearbox. Since the 2 gearboxes didn't always align perfectly, the first one needed to be shimmed up. Those guys hadn't taken the time to do that, so one day, I arrived to find that the output of the secondary gearbox wasn't turning on one machine. Upon removal of the shaft guard, I found the shaft broken. After I replaced it, the primary gearbox and motor were floating with a gap between them and the rest of the machine. Those guys had just pulled them down with the mounting bolts and not bothered to shim them up with washers. You did well aligning yours, obviously with just shims on the height. But if you don't mind a little extra expense, a Lovejoy connector can make alignment a little easier both horizontally and vertically.

There was a 1978 El Camino v8 that was converted to run on hydrogen (water through carb) back in 2006. Owner drove around for several thousand miles at low power, before locking in storage garage. Shop in Georgia used obsolete dual 1.5MH coils relay per cylinder,and diodes, and passed 6-7 amps current through spark plugs same time as spark, using Inverter with half wave diode. Champion plugs cross reference with same REACH can be taken apart at top to exchange 6kohm resistor for copper wire substitute- like a racing plug. Timing was retarded to minus 34 degrees. Will start and run Idle speed but for acceleration power, the carb was uncovered to increase size of main jet redrilled about 30% bigger for more water. The EGR assisted the efficiency, but later on they found out that just some of the exhaust water would also smooth out engine running if reused! The exhaust has compressed in Nitrogen from air that boosted efficiency. (Air is 78% Nitrogen) Web site shut down, but couple videos 1+2 are still there on him and son running lawnmower engine on water. S1R9A9M9 -Nathren) I studied the whole thing. He now only runs V8 on engine stand for 24hr hooked to electrical power generater, with water line .

And another thing would you have a great power steering with a go-kart engine for crying out loud I would lose your power steering and forgot our experience the anti steering capabilities of this car when the motor dies after throwing my head gaskets great and steering was not there because the angel is off and I had to stop going down from 45 to 0 within a curvy road fighting the steering and brakes finally had to run up into a driveway with a fight in basement to stop for crying out loud???

I think the "hood" off a riding mower would look way better. Want it liquid cooled? Take the cover off the cylinder, wrap 1/4" nickel-copper tubing around it, in between the air fins. Run those to a transmission cooler, mounted to the front, behind the grill. An inline 12v fuel pump is enough, run off the magneto (if the engine has one). A V-twin motorcycle engine would work here, too. Get the shaft drive transmission, cooler package. Do you run a 12v vacuum pump for the brakes? This is a great idea, what you have here. My added suggestions are merely ramblings. Take care.

Not trying to knock this but I picked up a 06 f150 long bed for 1000 bucks had 200k on it did break job and I can use it on the farm drive it down the road and it has AC just my 2 cents. Also we use old jeeps like YJ or TJ they work well around the farm doors and top off can get them in tight spaces and you can get them cheaper than a side by side and again slap a tag on them and do the speed limit if you need to run ti town for supplies. Like I said not knocking it I just think you could find a used truck with a factory motor and do the same thing for around the same amount of money

I appreciate the comment, but those sweet deals you are finding are not the norm, and as far as jeeps, there isn't a decent running/ driving jeep within 100 miles of here for less than $4000.00, and a 4000.00 jeep is going to have plenty of issues even if it will go down the road.

The story I am going to write is true. I can even name names if you have any doubts. At Christmas in 1969 my friend got a brand new 1970 Plymouth 'CUDA 340 4 speed. It was a time when Drag-Racing on Woodward Avenue was extremely popular. So, my friend raced his brand new 'CUDA on Friday and Saturday evenings out on Woodward Avenue. On Sundays we went to 2 different drag strips, Detroit Dragway and Motor City Dragway. (both are history now but google knows them) My friend's 'CUDA was very very quick. At the dragstrip the car went 14.0 @ 104mph with open exhaust and Casler Cheater Slicks. The only engine modification was a different "duel point" distributer that was "curved." So, bone stock otherwise that car got the absolute you know what run out of it. One day in about March of 1970 it developed a rod knock. Warranty would not cover it because in my small town everyone including their grandmother knew my friend raced it and that voided warranty. So, while waiting for K-Engineering* to build an engine, we put a 9hp Cast iron Briggs and Stratton in it. Being a 4speed manual we just took his old clutch and drilled holes all around the outer edge and matched those holes on a giant #35 Sprocket and bolted the two together with # 10 screws and nuts. The old clutch was a 10-1/2" diameter factory clutch and the sprocket was about the same diameter. We used a Mercury centrifugal clutch directly on the engine output shaft. That was all the gear reduction there was 10-1/2" to about 1-1/2" = 7 to 1.(I do not remember the number of teeth) To mount the engine I put solid wood 2"X10" right across the torsion bars and used "U" bolts to hold the wood. Then engine was bolted to the 2"X10". That was all there was to it. We didn't even mount the transmission, it just sort of stayed put by the chain. Using a string to pull the throttle on the carb we jumped in and drove it down to the local party store. Living on dirt roads we did not chance going out onto the tar, so we parked the car at another friends house where we parked our Go-Karts when we took them to the party store as kids and walked the last few hundred yards to the store. Upon returning the friends Dad was out admiring the car. When we walked up he looked at all of us with almost a blank stare. I thought he was unhappy because we parked a car in his yard and didn't say anything to him, so I began to apologize but he stopped me and asked me what year the car was. I told him it was a 1970. He looked at me puzzled and asked "where is the engine that belongs in it?" He said " Ben, this is a brand new car." OK, I understood his wonder, but It wasn't my "brand new car" but it had been parked at my Dad's house while K-Engineering found a 340 to build for it and I just got crazy waiting. The Chrysler 340 was only about 2 years into production and they were not very available for rebuilding. It took a while. As you can tell, we didn't put the engine in there to drive up to the Mackinaw Bridge, just to have something to do for a minute. But it worked. I think I only shifted one time. I shifted it into 2, and no higher, but it went about 25 mph down a little hill, then the chain fell off, so I didn't go so fast after that. So, that is the story about putting a 9hp Cast Iron Briggs & Stratton into a 1970 Plymouth 'CUDA and drove it to the store. ben/ michigan *Kay-Engineering was a Mopar guy who raced the super speedways with the Winged Chargers. He sons were Ron and Bob Keselowski, of the Brad Keselowski family. Brad Keselowski is part owner of the RFK racing company, and an accomplished NASCAR driver. I dealt with Brad's father way befor he was married, and with Brand's Grandfather John Keselowski who was the founder of K-Engineering. They lived very near my house and their business was about 6 miles away.

So you have a 48 tooth lower sprocket. What is you clutch tooth count. Also is this a 5 speed with overdrive? What is the rear axle ratio and tire size? Thanks.
@ChrisfromKeyfarm
2 жыл бұрын
235/75-15 tires, so if I remember correctly they are about 29" tall. I do not know the rear differential ratio??? I'm running a 10 tooth clutch clutch to a typical 5 speed transmission. Thanks for watching.

Really creative, so you can drive a vehicle without a clutch and a torque converter?
@ChrisfromKeyfarm
2 жыл бұрын
The centrifugal clutch works like a torque converter and you "float" shift the gears without a clutch like many drive an 18 wheeler. It's actually pretty easy once you know how to do it.

“WireFred Welder” outtake was inspiring. Humbly timing with a late night tongue-tie. My Dad acquired our small town’s 1939 International fire truck. Engine used to turn over, but I might suggest a Predator swap-in. We only want to drive it in parades and such. This has given me new hope!

10:46 am Do you use a clutch on the truck? I saw the coupler but not how clutch would work. If you use centrifugal clutch going to chain drive what information can you give on that? I'm interested in how this thing does on the farm...

Did you run the power brakes without vacuum? Works ok I guess? I have a 4 wheel drive Ranger I may put a V twin in but I want it under the hood so I guess I will have to run an extra jackshaft over to the side to make it work. I will put adjusters on the chains too so I can keep them tight. I need one with a light flatbed to use around the place and this will be much more dependable and much cheaper than a factory side by side.
