I have never seen one break until today and looked for a video, thanks for making it There has got to be poor manufacturing that they are buying and no one is asking questions or holding standards. That bolt should never break.

You hit the nail on the head. Plan to make my own pin out of a better material. Thinking 4140 or 17-4 PH at the moment. So many videos of this retainer pin breaking.

We are working on the same issue now. I'm glad to hear that Home Depot has the proper drill since all of the "real" hardware stores in my area are closed on the weekend. Great video. Thank you.

How did the project go? Were you able to get that broken part out?

@@geromefragua6401 We did get it out. Panicked a little when it first broke and ordered the Yukon extractor kit. Sadly, that kit came with a completely dull drill bit. Picked up a new bit from Home Depot (thanks to your video) and had the bolt out in about 2 minutes. Thanks again!

Dito, Dito, Dito!!! I TOO was able to do it....! I just drilled out a 1/2" x 5/16 bolt, then screwed it in as a guide. I used my 8" x 1/8" drill bit. As long as put the gears to the right postion to fit the drill and bit and it worked. YOUR idea! Thank you SO much!!!

This worked perfect, i appreciate the time you took to make the vid. I used the exact same part #'s Spacer- 596856 Drill- DW1602 I put a strip of electrical tape on the spacer to so i was able to screw it into the hole and hold it in place which worked great but it came right out with the easy out I didnt think home depot sold gun drills but your video saved my project and my day haha cheers man

I just snapped the bolt off on mine and I didn't realize such a common issue. I'm glad this video was thrown out there. I swear I was going to have an aneurysm. T.y! P.s, Glad this was the 1st video that came up. After watching a couple other videos them guys spending hours grinding away at the center pin, and scoring the housing SMH

Going to get my supplies tomorrow, wish me luck. 1/2 hour axle seal job turned into all this. Have to run to 3 different stores to get everything you got. Lowes has the drill bit but doesn't have the spacers. Home depot has the spacers but no drill bit long enough. Auto zone has the screw extractor. Still better then spending $50 for basically the same stuff and taking a chance with a dull drill bit. Thanks for the video

Good luck! That’s what happened to me too. Spray some WD40 before drilling and take your time. Don’t need a deep hole to get a bite on bolt. Let me know how it goes! 🤜🤛

@@geromefragua6401 I am happy to report it went well. I ended up cutting about an inch or 2 off the drill bit because it was too long and was hitting the leaf spring perch. I drilled in till I got about just into the cross pin but couldn't get the extractor in all the way, so i drilled till I was about halfway through cross pin. I lightly tapped in the extractor not trying to break it (it has horrible reviews on autozones website) After tapping it in I couldn't turn it with my finger so I used a adjustable wrench and it turned so easy I though for sure just the extractor was coming back out. Turns out it removed it very easily. Thanks a million for this video. Spent no more than $15 in parts and got the job done this weekend as opposed to spending $50 and having to postpone it till next weekend. Thanks again!

OK! I waited to reply until I tried this out! So! Yesterday, for a simple axle seal, I taken the cover off the diff, then observed the spiders were worrrrn! Either way I had to drop the pin! bolt came loose easily,, but DHOA!!! Only half came out! Just left my shop and came home frustrated! Last night, I figured I would see if anyone else had this problem and if there was an easy fix video! And apparently,, this is common! Though my rear is an 8.5 GM 1994 and not the Ford's I been seeing on here! I saw this video last night, and out of all videos I watched, this way seemed to be the one I thought was the best way to handle this! So, today, went and got the exact 3 items in this video and WOW!!! This came out faster than it taken me to find the tools I threw across the shop yesterday!!! I am not into kissin guys,, but Dude!!! I coulda given you one today! (not on the lips of course!! :) ,,,) OOO and my son , for getting me this LED head band light yesterday as well! EVERY mechanic, or person who works on anything,, NEEDS THIS LIGHT! Waaay better than trying to hold or find a place to hang or stick a light somewhere to try and see in that hole while working on it! Thank you for posting this video!! You deserve your name on the Saint list!
