My grandmother had a darning egg and at night when she was “resting” she would darn the socks that had holes in them. She grew up in the Masonic Children’s home in Batesville, Ark. Someone there taught her this along with sewing, crocheting, cooking, maths, reading, geography, harvesting wheat, planting and harvesting rice fields, chickens, pigs, cows, and goats, etc! Necessity is the mother of invention. We know from cave wall drawings, and burials that weaving of grasses and sedge was common as far back as 18,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic (also known as the Old Stone Age which lasted from 50,000 to 12,000 BC). In certain parts of Peru, conditions were such that woven artifacts have been discovered, surviving from 11,000 years ago!

It’s not sad. Plenty of people learn to do this kind of stuff. 100-200 years ago there was not as wide a variety of crafts/ trades as there are now, and women were often confined and boxed into things like sewing, cleaning and cooking. Now we have a large variety of things to do and be good at. For instance, If I want to be a doctor, I’m not going to have time to learn things like this because I’m mastering other things. It’s a sign of progress, and there will always be people that are great at knitting, sewing, etc.

It’s called darning. Our grandmothers in the 1800-1900 knew this basic skill. It’s unfortunate so many of us didn’t learn these necessary skills since going “green” requires we recycle ♻️, repair, or repurpose our clothes. Just saying. ❤

Thank you this means the world to me. My mum died in 93 and I have a jumper of hers that is so worn it's snagged and frayed. I won't trust it to anyone because it's truly irreplaceable and the universe or maybe she sent me this sign in ur short so I can do it myself. Thank you x

What is this wizardry? Nice. The music is fitting because of how you would feel if someone pulled off a repair like this on your favorite sweater. Lol.

Simple stitching. This is a very unappreciated art! It didn't occur to me until later how to properly use a lot of these techniques.
