Thank you for this very informative video and clear explanations. I just had mine done $$$ and was curious what a strut is and what does it do. You explained exactly what the mechanic shop had told me that the top was cracked and it could've gone through the hood of my Z! Now watching your video, I understand. Glad they found it as I'm going to ZFEST in CO next month (June'22) and that would have been a disaster! It may just be my imagination, but I feel the front end feels better to me now. I also had to have my radiator replaced secondary to a leak, again would be a disaster during a drive at ZFEST. Thanks again!

Great video! I have nearly the same car (roadster, not coupe), and just bought all the "genuine BMW" parts to rebuild (bookoo bucks, needless to say!). I have a couple quick Q's: first, what is the removable pin on the top strut plate for? Can I just leave it off? I was able to order reinforcing plates for an E46, which looks right but the hole for this pin is in a different spot. So, what is it for, and can I just leave it off, or do I need to drill a hole in the reinforcing plate to accommodate it? FYI, one of the pins in my old strut mounts is missing anyway. My right strut mount was torn almost worse than yours, and the same tower had mushroomed too! The left strut plate was distorted upward a bit, but the tower was still flat. This is after 115K and unknown previous owner history, but my impression is someone hit a hellacious pothole along the way. I even found a dent in the wheel that looked about right.

Good Video - I think letting the struts go too long past their useful life is what has caused the tower damage you showed. I'm replacing mine at 60k miles. The towers look as new. Maybe E89 has a redesigned tower, no visible damage. I will go with new B4 Bilstein all around and new upper strut mount. Thank you

Thanks for the reply. The nearest I can get is for an E46. I've ordered them and I'll see if they fit. BMW make them of the Z3 but not the Z4 I've been told. On the forums they've said BMW don't make them for the Z4. I've just bought the B12 kit with ebach springs so I'm keen on having reinforcement. Thanks for taking the time to do these vids, they've saved me lots of time and having to research this stuff for myself :)

I have the exact car, using your guide last night. I ran into a huge mess I have the same spring compressors as you. but I was having a hell of a time compression my Spring enough to reinstall. I ended up moving them all over in a desperate panic as I wedged the compressor bolt under the hat, spring was crooked and I was freaking out. I ended up compressing it from the bottom ledge of the strut housing. I've done tons of jobs with this same tool. I've never had this issue before. my question to you is, any suggestions to safely accomplish this? I remember thinking you were a newbie as I saw you had your spring all nasty crooked. but I ended up even worse. so I know you know my exact problem. what and how did you attack the other side? I have a couple ideas, but I'm not trying to get hurt. just keeping stock Springs on sport suspension to new Koni adjustables. thanks for this video. and in advanced for your help if you respond.

Hi there! About the reinforcement plate: in the original top mount of the struts there are three holes and a little screw. It appears that this screw is not compatible with the reinforcement plate (there is no hole in the reinforcement plate for this screw) so I removed the screw and just fixe the top mount + the reinforcement plate with the 3 fixations without this little screw. Is it important or not? I feel like the top mount moved because there was not this fixation. Thank you for your answer.

also I just watched it again. it seems my strut throw is half the distance as yours. Maybe cause I have a factory sport package? my new Koni adjustables match the height of my stock setups. but yours are clearly longer. so my issue is I have to really compress my Springs to a ridiculous level in order to get it to thread up top. if I had the same length as your setup I'd be fine. I have an e46 m3 and it was long and simple. anything you can offer to help would be great. thanks.

I am seeing similar with my struts (still in middle of job). I have a 2006 z4 w/sport suspension, and got a new OEM sport strut to replace. The new strut seems shorter by nearly 2 inches than the original. My compressor tool doesn't even have the clearance to grab one side by more than 2 coils, so I'm researching an alternate tool to rent/buy so I can compress sufficiently. My alternative may be to have two pairs of compressors as suggested further below, but seems like I might still have spring compression problems. How did yours turn out? Footnote: the replacement strut is a different part number, but it seems this supercedes my original strut. I have read that differences in strut height are not uncommon when replacing, depending on design of new strut. I am suspecting mine represents a minor design change to the sport strut.

I ended up using the power of the jack to compress mine back together. I used the old strut tip from the top to align the mount and washers and in a circular motion so they were perfectly lined up. Car resting on stands I took my Jack to the hub portion of the brake rotor and jacked it up. Slowly through the hole and as the new strut came into contact with the old one I helped it up as to not damage the adjuster on the top of my Konis. I had to with my hand also support the spring. It wanted to slide and misaligned itself. But after 4 resets and patience it went into place. I did this alone in the freezing parking lot at night in an apartment complex on a steep angle. So with a second helping hand this should work out. As far as getting it apart. I used the same spring compressor in this video. And once it was clamped I just pulled the trigger on my impact it popped a little. Nothing dangerous. I was just not able to squeeze them back enough to start my nut on the strut. And in the middle of the night I didn't have the option to leave the car on a jack considering car maintenance isn't allowed here. As far as the shorter strut....i was asked when purchasing if I had the factory sport suspension. And if it was the shorter one. Or not. Luckily I knew the answer and ordered them. So yes they seemed short as hell. So I placed them side by side with the old ones, and they were exactly the same. So hopefully you got the right ones. Cause of you had the longer ones to begin with you may be over smashing the spring to make the shorter one fit. Double check. I know they have 2 versions. And one part number won't supercede if it's simply just the incorrect strut. I've seen the normal long ones. They are definitely different. Good luck. Also my strut mount was torn so I had to pull it back out. And used my friends shop. He had the wall mounted compressor. And did the job in 20 seconds flat. Made me sick to see that lol. So if you have a friend like that it may be easier to simply hand him the units and in five mins have them both done. Or any shop. Hope this helps otherwise. Bimmer 4 life!

Hi, I was also wondering which Strut reinforcement plate you used. They do not have it under the Z4 E85. So are you using the plate from the Z3? You did not show that you put it on, only the shock. Some of us would be interested in knowing. We have looked for the Z4 plates and it's not that BMW does not want to help, it does not exist specific to this car. Since you bought them we would think you would have a part number? Thanks so much for the clarification. Thanks for the informative Vid's.

It is the first time I see one of your Videos and this one appears to be very useful and I thank you for it. This being said… why are you wearing flip flops??? You look like a bright Kid (no disrespect) but put you have to wear the proper equipment especially when working on a strut! One more remark: why not pay the local garage $50 to compress your springs??? I have seen Men loosing part of their faces in the ER because that spring came loose… you have the $ for a nice and Very Well equipped Z4 so an extra $50 or $100$ is well worth it! Being the age I am, I know realize that I am speaking like my Dad used to do with me lol… when I was young, I also took some foolish chances while working on my cars… lol Once again, Great Job on your Video and I will be watching all your other ones. Dealer told me there was no plate for my Z4 either. I ordered mine from an E46 config. The strut bolt locations are correct, but the locating pin is way off. I haven't put them on yet, still need to figure out if I need to accommodate that little pin, which seems useless to me - one is even missing on my existing upper strut mounts anyway. Also, the plate takes up some of the slack in the bolt/nut combo (less that 1/8 inch maybe?), but it still seems there is sufficient length. Will see!
